DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW:

Marketing communications builds public awareness of UC's value and its impact on the lives of people in California and beyond. Working with campus colleagues, UC Office of the President leaders and our clients, we convey the breadth and depth of UC's leadership in teaching, research and public service, and foster pride and engagement in the UC community. As stewards of the systemwide brand and visual identity we ensure the institution's values and aspirations are brought to life in each and every communication.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Are you a creative storyteller? Interested in creating short videos that breakdown the latest in science, research and news from around the UC system?

The Marketing Communications team at the University of California's systemwide headquarters is looking for a student with an interest in storytelling and science communication to create original video content for our social media channels - specifically our research video channel on YouTube, Fig. 1 (youtube.com/fig1) and the university's Instagram and TikTok channels. This is a paid internship for the summer.

We're looking for a person who thinks of social media as a powerful journalistic tool and is excited about making complex research engaging for the general public - with a comfort or eagerness to work in video and record voiceover for social media video content.

Reporting to the Director of Multimedia, the role will work and collaborate with the multimedia team, giving feedback on scripts and recording/editing video content. The Video Intern will get valuable, hands-on job experience using industry-leading software while playing a significant role in a large brand's social media strategy and making connections across the UC system.

Current journalism, communications, film/video, marketing or theater students are welcome.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Research and Planning - 30%

  • Work with the multimedia team to develop an approach for short form, social media videos
  • Bring a student perspective to our approach to short form video content
  • Identify and research compelling topics for videos that highlight the impact of UC research and people
  • Keep up on trends across social media, including those pertinent to higher education, and pitch ideas to the team.

Content Creation - 70%

  • Film short video content with a smartphone (or preferred camera), possibly including voiceovers
  • Review and edit scripts and interview questions
  • Assemble and edit videos based off of scripts written by others on the marketing team
  • Work with the social media team to post content and collaborate with campus team.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Currently enrolled University of California student
  • An interest in making science and research relatable and compelling.
  • An understanding of the social media landscape.
  • Experience with the basics of filming (with a smartphone, DSLR or cinema camera) and recording/editing audio
  • Comfortable using Adobe Premiere.
  • Confidence working with new platforms and programs.
  • The ability to collaborate easily with writers, designers and social media managers.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • An ability to help tell complex stories in simple, understandable ways.
  • A sharp eye for shareable story ideas.
  • Creative with unique ideas and a sense of humor.
  • A desire to experiment with new forms of content on social media.

EDUCATION:

  • High school graduate and currently enrolled University of California student

SALARY AND BENEFITS:

  • $19.96-24.95 hourly

Location: Remote within the state of California but occasional travel to UC campuses.

Hours: 40 hours/week during the summer.
