Johns Hopkins University supports a flexible work environment. This position operates on a hybrid modality, three days onsite. Traditionally that onsite presence will be in Baltimore at the School of Nursing, with monthly opportunity to be in Washington, D.C., at IPS. When going to D.C., there would be no request to be in Baltimore that same week. Travel days for university business count toward onsite days. The manager will confirm the team's core onsite days where the majority/all team members will work in the office.

The Institute for Policy Solutions (IPS) works with health policy leaders, innovators, and researchers to redesign the U.S. health system. With the goal of shifting policy and practice to more preventive, value-based and whole-person care, the Institute elevates, develops and implements evidence-based, actionable nurse-led solutions. A focus on eliminating racist policies and structures entrenched in the country's health care establishment and other systems underpins the Institute's work.

The Johns Hopkins School of Nursing (JHSON) is a globally-recognized leader in nursing education, research, and practice. In U.S. News & World Report rankings, the school is No. 1 nationally for its master's and DNP programs. In addition, JHSON is ranked as the No. 3 nursing school in the world by QS World University. With over 15,000 alumni, the school has an excellent reputation for training of future nursing leaders and nurse educators, and, among other things, specializes in community public health nursing, global nursing, geriatric nursing, and patient safety.

The Sr. Associate Director of Development will play a pivotal role in advancing the mission of the Institute for Policy Solutions (IPS) by securing transformational philanthropic investments and building deep relationships with institutional and individual donors. The Sr. Associate Director will serve as a key partner to IPS leadership, overseeing high-impact philanthropic strategies that drive innovation, elevate IPS's mission, and increase its influence.

The Sr. Associate is an integral member of a highly successful development and alumni relations (DAR) team at the top-ranked school of nursing. This position is vital to the success of the JHSON development team. Reporting to the Associate Dean of Development for the SON, this position requires a dynamic, entrepreneurial leader who thrives in a fast-paced environment and demonstrates exceptional strategic thinking, relationship management, and communication skills.

Key responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership:

  • Serve as a strategic thought partner to the IPS Executive Director, designing and executing bold fundraising strategies that align with IPS priorities.
  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of the research, programs, and priorities of the Institute for Policy Solutions to represent these needs both internally and externally.
  • Collaborate with DAR SON and JHSON leadership to integrate IPS fundraising into broader institutional campaigns and initiatives.
  • Develop strategies to expand IPS's donor base, with a focus on high-potential institutional and individual giving opportunities.

Portfolio Management:

  • Manage a portfolio of approximately 75 major giving ($100,000+) prospects, including planned giving prospects; this work includes moving them along the prospect readiness continuum as appropriate, whether via discovery, cultivation, solicitation, or stewardship visits.
  • Annual performance metrics, including 75 visits and 100 substantive actions.
  • This role is expected to generate approximately $2M in annual fundraising revenue once fully established.

Communication and Stewardship:

  • Develop compelling proposals, case statements, and other donor materials that articulate IPS's impact and funding priorities.
  • Partner with communications teams to create tailored materials for engaging prospects and stewarding current donors.

Collaboration and Events:

  • Collaborate with DAR, JHSON, and university-wide teams to cross-promote IPS initiatives and leverage shared resources.
  • Lead planning and execution of donor events to cultivate, solicit, and steward relationships with key stakeholders.

Internal Advocacy:

  • Represent IPS in internal and external meetings, building strong relationships across Johns Hopkins University.
  • Provide strategic insights to IPS and DAR leadership on fundraising trends and opportunities for growth.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Five years professional related experience.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated success in securing 6- and 7- figure gifts from corporate, foundation, and individual donors.
  • Proven ability to manage and engage senior leadership in prospect strategy and donor relationships.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to craft compelling donor narratives.
  • Strong analytical and creative thinking skills, with the ability to leverage data to inform strategies.
  • Entrepreneurial mindset, with the ability to identify and develop new donor markets.
  • Experience in planning and executing high-impact donor events and initiatives.
  • High degree of comfort in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
  • Ability to maintain discretion, tact, and professionalism in all interactions.
  • Willingness to travel and to work occasional evening or weekend hours as needed.

This salary range does not include all components of the School of Nursing compensation program. This position may be eligible for a discretionary retention and performance bonus, based on individual performance and the School of Nursing performance during the applicable fiscal year, as determined by the leaders of the School of Nursing in their sole discretion. Therefore, the actual compensation paid to the selected candidate may vary slightly from the salary range stated herein.

Total Rewards
The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of Johns Hopkins University's salary range for this position. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Exact salary will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, work experience, market conditions, education/training and other qualifications. Education and Experience Equivalency
Please refer to the job description above to see which forms of equivalency are permitted for this position. If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines: JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
