Accounting Supervisor

We are seeking anAccounting Supervisorwho will perform routine and complex accounting activities requiring knowledge of systems, independent judgment, and an ability to respond accordingly. S/he oversees activities on contributions accounting for the entire University ensuring compliance with GAAP. S/he assists with the annual external audit. S/he generates routine and ad hoc contribution reporting and conceptualizes projects and follows through. S/he supervises and trains the staff/senior accountant(s) in contributions. S/he maintains the accuracy of financial records. S/he possesses strong interpersonal, communication and collaboration skills. The candidate collaborates with other departments within University Finance to obtain data from and provide data to the General Accounting department and the Controller, as well as trustees of the University. The candidate will also be required to provide support to the General Accounting department during the quarterly reporting period and year-end.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assist in internal and annual external audits by providing required documentation and explanations related to contributions. This would also include the unaudited quarterly University GAAP statements, and School of Medicine monthly GAAP statements.
  • Complete the recording and reconciliation of contributions in the JHAS contribution system to SAP.
  • Prepare entries for net assets released from restrictions and contribution receivables.
  • Review the gift assessment monthly reconciliation.
  • Prepare timely and accurate financial reports detailing contribution income, supporting the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
  • Collaborates with development to maintain accurate records of donor contributions in JHAS and process donation receipts, ensuring that they are properly classified and recorded.
  • Collaborates with Advancement Services in Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) team to stay informed of new gifts, changes in processes, and changes with JHAS.
  • Coordinate all new endowment set-up approvals both internally and with the board office.
  • Review and analyze significant accounting transactions to ensure proper GAAP treatment which may require research of technical accounting literature.
  • Prepare monthly and quarterly entries for contributions to be posted in SAP.
  • Prepare reconciliations for contribution receivable in SAP accounts using Blackline.
  • Provide excellent customer service to divisions, departments and faculty and provide information to JHU personnel in a prompt, accurate and cordial fashion.
  • Develop proficiency in relevant accounting and reporting requirements, most notably, The Not-for-Profit Presentation of Financial Statements.
  • Assist with Section 117 International Reporting with Financial Reporting and General Counsel.
  • Work with and mentor staff.
  • Develop, document, implement and maintain department policies and procedures.
  • Other duties and/or projects as assigned.
  • Supervisory responsibility for a Senior Accountant.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Business, Finance or related field.
  • Five years of progressively responsible related work experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with auditing or in an external financial reporting function including managing and interacting with external auditors.
  • CPA preferred.
  • SAP experience a plus.
  • JHAS experience a plus.
  • Supervisory experience a plus.
  • Experience with various software applications (e.g. spreadsheets, relational databases, statistical and graphic packages), to assemble, manipulate and/or format data and/or reports. Proficiency in advanced Excel functions, Word, PowerPoint and various other applications.

The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of Johns Hopkins University's salary range for this position. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Exact salary will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, work experience, market conditions, education/training and other qualifications. Education and Experience Equivalency
Please refer to the job description above to see which forms of equivalency are permitted for this position. If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines: JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
