About the role

The Environmental Director is responsible for assisting in the development, implementation, management and oversight of the company's policies and procedures relating to environmental risks, including all regulatory compliance in connection with mandates promulgated by EPA, OSHA, and other federal, state, and local regulatory agencies, and Environmental Management Plans. This position is also responsible for assisting in managing the company's overall risk profile relating Environmental issues with an emphasis on assurance, and risk mitigation. These duties span across Balfour Beatty US Investments property management and development portfolio. This is a remote position.

Ensure regulatory compliance; Provide operational assurance; Develop safe systems of work; Reduce and manage risk; Interact with all levels of staff to provide oversight and technical guidance.

What you'll be doing



  • Collaborate with internal operation and business development staff to provide technical support and subject matter expert guidance on Environmental risk, reporting, and due diligence in connection with pursuit of new business opportunities
  • Provide comprehensive evaluation to evaluate environmental concerns, determine causation, recommend remedial measures, and reporting in collaboration with operations staff. legal, compliance, and consultants as needed
  • Evaluate environmental risks and controls and develop and implement control processes in collaboration with operations staff, legal, compliance, and consultants. Develop and implement environmental management systems to monitor, report, and assess performance and compliance.
  • Assist in monitoring and overseeing all sites for environmental compliance including audits and operational assurance assessments
  • Function as point of contact with external organizations and stakeholders as it relates to testing, compliance, reporting, assurance and technical support and expert guidance on Environmental risks and issues.
  • Assist in producing environmental training programs for companywide implementation and ensure these programs and tactics are being executed at all levels and sites.
  • Assist in developing, publishing, and maintaining corporate Environmental Management Policies and the identification of key controls.
  • Maintain Project Environmental Management Plans for Operations, Project and Legal team for contractual requirements with Public Private Ventures. Prepare and update Environmental Management Plans for new and existing projects.
  • Prepare subject matter content and collaborate with communications for environmental communications.
  • Provide support for company sustainability initiatives.


Who we're looking for



  • Working knowledge of applicable environmental laws, regulations and work practices for the construction, maintenance, and property management industries. Experienced with reading and interpreting environmental reports and testing data in connection with standard operations in these fields.
  • Bachelor's degree in health, Safety, Science or Engineering required
  • Minimum of 10 years' experience of environmental health and safety experience.
  • Subject expertise in lead, asbestos, mold, radon, indoor air quality, drinking water, groundwater and soil quality standards, solid and hazardous waste management, and stormwater management and permitting.


  • Experience in working with Microsoft Excel, Word, Power Point, Sharepoint, Smartsheet, and related software systems and programs.
  • Statutes, Laws & Regulations - Working knowledge of applicable standards promulgated by EPA, OSHA and regulatory authorities sanctioned to oversee these industries.
  • Planning/organizing - Ability to organize work, set priorities, work independently and make productive use of time. Must also be able to instill planning and organizational traits to a subordinate level through management techniques and delegation.
  • Adaptability - Ability to accept changes in the work environment manages competing demands and is able to deal with frequent changes, delays or unexpected events.
  • Integrity - Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.
  • Communication and Contact - Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with superiors, colleagues, and individuals inside and outside the Company. Must be able to effectively communicate with subordinate staff with clear directives, institute follow-up communication mechanisms and address/correct issues arising from miscommunication of goals/directives. Employee must frequently provide a high level of customer service to field management.
  • Relationships with Others: Ability to work effectively and relate well with others including superiors, colleagues, and individuals inside and outside the Company. The employee exhibits a professional manner in dealing with others and works to maintain constructive working relationships.
