Position Summary
The Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics seeks to fill a fixed-term assistant professor position in the role of Core Facility Director. The Director is the scientific and administrative leader of the UNC Macromolecular Interactions Facility. This facility makes a variety of biochemical and biophysical techniques available to the campus and, occasionally, non-campus researchers, for characterization of biological macromolecules and to explore their interactions with cognate ligands, by providing access to a host of modern instruments and training. The Director guides users in rigorous experiment design, equipment operation, data acquisition, and data analysis and interpretation. The Director will join a supportive campus network of researchers and other core facility directors and is a participating member of the Department faculty. This individual is also responsible for teaching one PhD-level course each year. The Director also regularly obtains resources for the core through partnerships and submitting instrumentation grants. The Director is not expected to develop an independent research program but will participate in scholarly collaborations that result in funding proposals and publications.

The principal functions of the Director include 1) core facility management, 2) training, and 3) graduate teaching.
1) The Director oversees the daily operations of all offered services and equipment including their maintenance, coordinates the activities of staff personnel, manages billing operations, manages the annual budget, and prepares reports.
2) The Director works with faculty and students from the entire UNC biomedical research community to support their research through collaborations and training in relevant techniques and analyses. The Director will train new users, participate in grant writing, and original research publications through collaborations with UNC principal investigators.
3) The Director leads BIOC 662 Macromolecular Interactions, a 1-credit course currently offered for 5 weeks each spring semester to PhD students. They may also serve on PhD dissertation committees and supervise undergraduates in their research.

As a faculty member, the Director will also participate in activities that support the research and education missions of the Department, UNC School of Medicine, and the University. The Director joins a highly ranked vibrant Department and an engaged and collaborative campus community.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
The applicant must have a PhD in a biomedical research discipline relevant to biochemistry or biophysics.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Practical expertise related to macromolecules and their interactions in biochemistry and biophysics as demonstrated through high-quality, peer-reviewed publications is required. Experience with a wide variety of instruments such as ITC, SPR, MST, CD, SEC- MALS, etc. is beneficial. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required for collaborative interactions with the scientific community and for writing scientific papers, research grants, and presentations. Experience with training and mentoring personnel and didactic teaching is a plus.
