Primary Purpose The Principal Electrical Engineer is a Subject Matter Expert (SME) on the LNG Operations Service Team providing technical expertise to Sempra Infrastructure's operating facilities and those under development. Acting as part of a shared service team supporting Sempra Infrastructure and implementing Sempra's Guiding Principles, the Principal Electrical Engineer SME must have the ability to understand the integrated LNG liquefaction value chain and navigate through the constraints of operating facilities. Using their skills and insights to support, assist, measure, troubleshoot, improve, develop, etc., they will be enablers of Operational Excellence throughout Sempra Infrastructure's LNG assets. Key broad areas of expertise will include power distribution including high voltage, substation and motor control center design, all size and classification of electric motors, back-up power systems, power quality and conditioning, assist in turnaround and turnaround planning, etc., and being able to effectively share and communicate that expertise to a diverse workforce, in the context of a customer driven shared services organization supporting the commercial goals of a world class LNG Export operation. Duties and Responsibilities
- Serves as a technical Electrical Engineer expert resource to operating facilities and Sempra Infrastructure management. Provides expertise in maintaining, upgrading, and improving overall electrical system performance. Observes and gauges operating facilities, provide unique insight and when necessary, develops and implements solutions to problems the facilities experience.
- Evaluates robustness of substation and MCCs as related to conditions of power quality, back-feed, and backup capability. Evaluates and optimizes field and power distribution wiring systems, backup power systems, including generation and UPS systems.
- Reviews, troubleshoots and develops strategies to manage all electrical components and related systems.
- Troubleshoots motor performance and all forms of motor starters including VFD/VSD.
- Troubleshoots and recommends mitigation of electric induced interference.
- Specifies and troubleshoots field device interferences with control systems, especially for rotating equipment including turbine systems.
- Troubleshoots outlier events including spurious trips and alarms.
- Handles cable tray design, routing, and protection.
- Provides and develops technical training support for plant operations and maintenance as related to plant electrical systems and power distribution. Champions the adoption on best Practices across operating facilities including practical safe work practices effective LOTO & MOC practices. Develops and manages scopes of work for technical studies.
- Participates in the development of Sempra Infrastructure LNG and associated assets and participates on PHA teams.
- Performs other duties as assigned (no more than 5% of duties).
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, in the area of electrical or power engineering required. Master's degree is a plus.
Experience
- 12+ years of experience in Energy or LNG Industry of which at least 4 years as specialist with Electrical engineering discipline required.
- Knowledge of IEE Standards and National Electrical Code required.
- 10+ years of experience having worked in a plant environment preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Advanced knowledge of complex electrical engineering principles and techniques within primary discipline. Solid understanding of engineering design and construction techniques across all disciplines.
- Comprehensive knowledge of electrical codes, regulations, and industry standards such as NFPA-70, NFPA 70-E, NFPA 101 and API 500; advises on applicability and use. Full knowledge of API, ANSI, NETA, PIP and other Electrical industry codes and standards.
- Understanding of industry trade groups and organizations.
- Understanding of operational and commercial aspects of LNG Facilities.
- Applied knowledge of working in a plant environment.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while achieving corporate and project goals.
- Ability to deal with a wide variety of people with tact, courtesy and professionalism.
- Ability to communicate in a professional and effective manner, including in-person, telephone, and E-mail.
- Ability to work independently and function with limited supervision.
- Ability to coach and mentor less experienced engineers.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, Power Point).
Other Qualifications
- Ability to travel to facilities outside the United States.
HYBRID: Work a combination of onsite and remote days each week, typically 3 days per week onsite.
