As our Marketing and Communications Intern, you'll play a pivotal role in shaping our brand through innovative designs and engaging marketing strategies.
Here's what you'll be doing:
  1. Fueling Creativity: Collaborate on developing captivating content for a variety of platforms including social media, videos, emails, and web, bringing our marketing plans to life.
  2. Social Media Maven: Keep our community engaged by updating event listings on our website and Facebook pages for venues like the Retzer Nature Center and Waukesha County Parks.
  3. Brand Ambassador: Ensure consistency by adhering to brand guidelines while designing custom signage for donations, parks, and marketing materials.
  4. Design Extraordinaire: Utilize your expertise in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) to craft eye-catching visuals and mockups that captivate our audience.
  5. Analytical Insight: Measure and analyze the success of marketing initiatives, providing valuable feedback to refine our strategies.
  6. Team Player: Collaborate across departments, supporting various initiatives with your creative flair and technical skills.

What you bring to the table:
  • Passion for Design: Basic knowledge of design principles and hands-on experience with Adobe Creative Suite.

Minimum Requirements:
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Pursuing a degree in marketing, graphic design, or related field preferred.
  • Previous experience in graphic design and marketing is advantageous.
  • Valid Driver's License.

Work Schedule: 16 hours/week between 8am-4:30pm, beginning June 2 through August 29, 2025.

Starting Hourly Rate Range: $15.47 to $17.53, depending on qualifications.

Prior to hiring, the successful candidate will be subject to work/education/certification reference(s) verification AND a criminal background and driver's license check.

Example of Duties

  1. Assist in developing content for marketing and advertising promotional activities according to marketing plan (e.g., social media, videos, collateral, email marketing, customer newsletter graphics, internal communications, and web)
  2. Support the Public Communication team in daily administrative tasks:
    1. Update Waukesha County Parks events to website
    2. Create and post events to Facebook accounts for Retzer Nature Center (RNC), Waukesha County Parks (WCP)
    3. Assist in Department of Parks and Land Use Department social media updates. (WCP, Expo Center, Recycling, Waukesha County Golf, Ice Arenas)
    4. Share partner events to Facebook accounts for RNC, WCP
    5. Update WaukeshaCounty.gov/ParkAlerts
  3. Review and provide recommendations for improvement to current marketing plan
  4. Design custom donation, park, and marketing signage
  5. Adhere to brand guidelines and complete projects on deadlines
  6. Use graphic design software and work with a variety of media
  7. Review new marketing concepts and create mockups using computer software programs such as Adobe Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator
  8. Provide feedback on design concepts created by others
  9. Create layouts for advertisements, brochures, magazines, and other printed materials
  10. Create visual designs that communicate messages effectively using a variety of methods, such as color, typography, imagery, and layout
  11. Measure and report the results of marketing initiatives
  12. Work with cross-functional teams as part of our marketing department to support various Departmental initiatives

Minimum Qualifications

Essential Knowledge and Abilities

  1. Applied understanding of basic marketing principles.
  2. Basic knowledge of layouts, typography, line composition, color, and other graphic design fundamentals.
  3. Experience with Canva, Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator).
  4. Familiarity with major social media platforms (Facebook, X, Instagram, LinkedIn, etc.).
  5. Creative problem solving and analytical skills.
  6. Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
  7. Ability to effectively interact with sensitivity with persons from diverse cultural, socioeconomic, educational, racial, ethnic, and professional backgrounds, and persons of all ages and lifestyles.
  8. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, other staff, and the public.
  9. Ability to work with minimal direction and take initiative to follow projects through to completion.
  10. Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  11. Ability to speak and write effectively.
  12. Ability to keep records and make reports.
Minimum Qualifications
  1. High school diploma or GED with some graphic and visual design coursework.
  2. Pursuing a post-high school degree in marketing, graphic design or related field.
  3. Valid Driver's License.
  4. Previous experience in graphic design, marketing and public communication is desirable.
