Description of primary duties and responsibilities:
Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit:

The Division of Academic Affairs and Student Affairs' primary role is to provide an exceptional academic and co-curricular student experience from orientation through graduation. Student Affairs is comprised of the Administrative Office of the Vice Chancellor and the following units: Student Conduct, Counseling and Personal Development Center, Intramural & Recreational Sports, Residence Life, Office of Student Activities & Student Engagement, Rudolph Jones Student Center, and Student Health Services.

Primary Purpose of the Position:

New student orientation is a journey that prepares a diverse group of students (traditional-age, adult learners, military-affiliated, transfer, first-generation) for life as a student at Fayetteville State University and beyond. This journey will promote engaged citizenship, learning, career readiness, and the interpersonal development of newly enrolled students. The Director of New Student Orientation and Transition Programs will provide leadership in utilizing innovative best practices in the planning and implementation of events and program initiatives related to the orientation and transition of new students, including primary responsibility for New Student Orientation programs, freshman learning communities, assisting with freshman orientation courses 101, 102, and 105, coordinating Parent and Family Programs, and serving as Freshman Class Advisor. Integral in these efforts is collaboration with campus partners, including Enrollment Management, Bronco One-Stop, Student Success, Residence Life, Student Health Services, Student Activities and Engagement, and other student-facing departments in creating inclusive programming geared towards on-boarding new students to the larger campus community, instilling school pride, and increasing student success by ensuring that they are engaged and connected to university resources.
Minimum Education And Experience Requirements:

  • Master's degree required.
  • Proficient in all Microsoft forms as well as social media platforms.
  • Supervisory experience required (If supervision is required (students, staff), it will need to be added as a required skill).
  • Experience working with a diverse student population and recognizing the varying needs of such a diverse student population.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities:
Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with the development and implementation of orientation activities.
  • Experience (five years minimum) in a student-facing role in higher education.
  • Actively fosters a culture that promotes equity and inclusion.
  • Demonstrated use of innovative ideas in programming for college students.
  • Experience in developing and maintaining effective working relationships with fellow staff members and campus partners.
  • Experience aligning programmatic outcomes with campus partners related to presentation content, delivery, and messaging in orientation activities.
  • Demonstrated experience in supervising, selecting, and training undergraduate student staff.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a highly collaborative team of professionals and student leaders.
  • Theoretical and practical understanding of student development.
