Key Position Details:

This is a Casual Laboratory Assistant position to support our hospital laboratory services on an as-needed basis. Initial shifts will be during the evenings and overnights. Weekend and holiday shifts will be required based on departmental needs. The role is designed to adapt to laboratory system demands, with shift scheduling determined through an agreement between the employee and leadership.

  • Work 8-hour or 12-hour shifts depending on the site's needs.
  • Maintain competency at two or more locations to ensure adequate coverage.
  • Commit to a minimum of 15 shifts per quarter to sustain active status.
  • Initially support Metro Allina hospitals with future expansion to multiple locations across our system.
  • Be flexible in assignments-if a critical need arises at another location, employees may be temporarily reassigned.
  • Eligible for mileage reimbursement
  • Potential opportunity to pick up day shifts in the future based on system needs and eligibility.

Job Description:

Performs laboratory functions that support the laboratory mission with an emphasis on customer service. The Lab Assistant (LA) performs laboratory function of specimen collection (i.e., venipuncture, capillary, cultures, and chain of custody); across hospital laboratories based on the resource pool assignment. May also be required to perform EKGs or iStat testing based on location.

Principle Responsibilities

  • Performs routine laboratory procedures within established guidelines.
    • Verifies patient identification.
    • Identifies and uses appropriate collection method to obtain samples for testing (venipuncture or capillary puncture).
    • Collects sample, evaluates specimen acceptability, and labels specimens.
    • May perform waived/moderate complexity testing.
    • May perform EKGs.
    • Stocks, rotates, and requests phlebotomy supplies on a regular basis to ensure proper availability.
    • Maintains safety, education, and competency requirements.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • High School or GED
  • Minimum 1 year phlebotomy experience
  • Reliable transportation, eligible for mileage reimbursement

Preferred Qualifications

  • Travel experience

Licenses/Certifications

  • Phlebotomy Certification upon hire preferred

Physical Demands

  • Light Work:
  • Lifting weight Up to 20 lbs. occasionally, Up to 10 lbs. frequently

Pay Range

Pay Range: $18.09 to $24.64 per hour The pay described reflects the base hiring pay range. Your starting rate would depend on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, your experience, education, and the union agreement (if applicable). Shift, weekend and/or other differentials may be available to increase your pay rate for certain shifts or work.
