Organizational Unit Overview
The Office for Faculty Excellence ( OFE) provides faculty development programming and support to faculty and emerging faculty with the mission of "Supporting Outstanding Faculty in Their Teaching, Research, & Service through Faculty Development Programming and Consultation." The office works with partners to program well over 200 programs during the year and several intensive summer professional development opportunities. The OFE coordinates New Faculty Orientation and events such as the University Teaching Awards Ceremony. OFE team members provide consulting, advertise, or organize workshops on topics that are relative to faculty roles and processes, and make asynchronous resources available for faculty to access as needed.
Job Duties
The Instructional Specialist will provide course design and planning support to faculty in order to create effective and engaging learning environments that are aligned with clear objectives and result in desired learning outcomes. This position will consult with faculty and subject matter experts from diverse disciplines to identify evidence-based instructional strategies that align with course goals. The Instructional Specialist will provide pedagogical training to faculty through workshops, webinars, video tutorials, consultation, and other instructional methods. Support provided to faculty should be grounded in Universal Design for Learning and up-to-date knowledge of best practices and emerging needs/resources for the college learning environment.

(40%) Instructional Design Direct Support: Assist faculty in the direct development of course materials for delivery of face-to-face, hybrid, and online courses. Provide guidance and collaborate in the creation of high-quality videos, graphics, animations, and other interactive material using a variety of tools, as applicable for course design support for faculty. Maintain up-to-date expertise in best practices and emerging resources/trends for high quality postsecondary course. Collaborate with other campus partners (e.g. Academic Technologies, QEP, college-based instructional support, etc.), as needed, for provided well-rounded faculty support and responding to specific initiatives. Maintain up-to-date knowledge of best practices for design of online learning materials and courses, obtain applicable certifications (e.g. Quality Matters trainer) and collaborate with ITCS team members, as applicable for direct support to faculty.
(40%) Training and Resource Development: Facilitate twice-annual Introduction to College Teaching mini-course. Lead, develop, facilitate, and or assist with professional development workshops and symposiums. Plan and facilitate annual Teaching Series to include in-person and virtual workshops across a variety of relevant topics. Coordinate planning for and facilitate annual summer course redesign institute. Lead teaching-related Faculty Learning Communities as applicable. Maintain updated asynchronous resource materials related to teaching on the Office for Faculty Excellence website.
(10%) Consultation Services: Provide consultation and direct support related to course planning and delivery with individuals, collaborative course design teams, and academic units. Collaborate with other campus partners (e.g. Academic Technologies, QEP, college-based instructional support, etc.), as needed, for provided well-rounded faculty support and responding to specific initiatives.
(10%) Office For Faculty Excellence Team Support: Actively contribute to Office for Faculty Excellence efforts that involve all team members including but not limited to events such as: New Faculty Orientation, Annual Teaching Awards event, and Scheduling and Marketing workshops and events

This position is contingent upon available funding.
Minimum Education/Experience

  • Master's degree and at least 3 years of relevant experience designing and facilitating high quality learning environments in higher education; or a bachelor's degree and at least 5 years of relevant experience designing and facilitating high quality learning environments in higher education.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of design models and frameworks (e.g. backward design, Universal Design for Learning, Quality Matters) that help faculty fully design and prepare high quality and engaging courses
  • Proficiency using the Canvas Learning Management System or similar LMS


License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

  • Proficiency with a variety of applicable instructional technologies and interactive tools (e.g., Adobe Products, H5P, etc..)
  • Experience with Audio and Video Editing Tools
  • Ability and willingness to quickly learn new tools
