What We Offer This position exists to support the growth of CA NA business by initiating, executing, and leading technical projects to solve complex customer or market problems. The job holder is responsible for conducting and documenting technical/lab activities within the Construction, Architectural, and Printing & Packaging market, with a primary focus on profitable sales growth of specialty products for the business Major Responsibilities:
- Initiates, executes, and leads application development projects and programs in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders aligned with the company's strategy by resolving complex problems
- Performs multiple difficult technical assignments/experiments requiring technical discover, develops new products, and has solid understanding of advanced chemistry theories
- Develop, implement, and specify processes and products based on Business and Market Segment team strategy to optimize the portfolio and improve profitability
- Extend and apply specialized expertise, also by exchange with external partners to create new business
- Support customers along the process by producing new products and processes to ensure smooth and trouble-free processes
- Creates value for our customers and Covestro by developing new products and formulations with improved properties, lower costs or both as a part of customer projects and activities
- Supports sales growth of Covestro's products in the Architectural, Construction, and Printing & Packaging markets by evaluating and reporting the market situation executing market studies, identifying market and technology trends, and defining focus areas
- Ability to formulate various coating technologies and chemistries including Solventborne and Waterborne systems, 1-component and 2-component technologies, and Polyurethane and Polyacrylate chemistries
- Represents Covestro at fairs and conducts product training presentations to internal and external audiences
- Develop and implement safety guidelines in their area
- Coach and mentor others in the field of expertise and drive further employee's developments to ensure integrity, security, and quality of work
- Creates and maintains good working relationships with external stakeholders, customers, vendors (e.g., additive suppliers, equipment suppliers) and other service providers in the coatings industry to optimize products' procession during application
- Serves as the lead for developing and promoting the use of Design of Experiments methodologies and digital tools for development work across the Business Unit. This includes assisting other chemists in proper set up of projects and advising on improvements to design and analysis. In this way the position serves to improve the understanding of the overall performance of our products in a broader and productive manner.
- Designs experiments and develops new test methods to solve unique problems where guidance to assist project definition is not available or is incomplete
- Ensures sustainable business over the long term by supporting development of patented solutions to complex technical problems. The Scientist works with the Legal (Patent) Department in understanding prior art and in the preparation of patents to protect Covestro's technology. The Scientist considers the possibility of IP protection and the consequences of adjacent or conflicting IP in all projects
- Administrates and assists in the implementation of digital tools
- Use understanding of products, formulation science, application techniques and structure-property relationships to develop solutions
What You Offer Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degreewith 4+ years of relevant industry experience OR:
- Master's degree with 2+ years of relevant industry experience
- Knowledge in the formulation and testing of raw materials for coatings, and application methods for formulated systems within their defined application area
- Very good project management skills
Preferred Qualifications: Basic education (degrees in Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry, Material Science, Chemical Engineering, or related field; experience preferably in coating and/or adhesives laboratories)
- Ph.D. with 1+ years of experience
Essential Knowledge and Skills:
- Proven ability to independently plan and effectively execute lab projects guided by segment strategy and priorities, solve complex problems and develop formulations
- Very good communication, critical thinking, problem solving, organizational and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work effectively in teams, in diverse groups, and with other cultures
- Ability to travel domestically
- Must be comfortable working with customer laboratory personnel as well as with end users applying and using the customer formulation
