Overview
Functions as a Pharmacy Technician as defined by the Iowa Board of Pharmacy. Assists pharmacists in preparing and distributing sterile and non-sterile medications and maintaining accurate medication records. All duties are performed under the supervision of a registered pharmacist.

OPERATIONAL FUNCTIONS
- Prepares and distributes medication products to fulfill medication orders
- Utilizes automation to assure safe and accurate distribution and secure storage of medications
- Compounds sterile medications in an appropriate clean room environment to assure a safe, accurate and sterile product, in accordance with facility, state, and federal laws and regulations (including USP 797 and 800)
- Demonstrates competency, precision, and accuracy in the preparation of compounded products
- Compounds non-sterile medications in an appropriate compounding area to assure a safe and accurate product in accordane with facility, state and federal laws and regulations (including USP 795)
- Answers the telephone, identifying self and department and directing calls to appropriate personnel in a professional and courteous manner
- Ensures appropriate and adequate medication inventory by restocking, rotating stock, removing expired medications, packaging medications, and ordering supplies
- Accurately performs data entry for patient billing
- Ensures proper medication storage
- Maintains a neat, clean, orderly, and secure department
COMPLIANCE
- Ensures the appropriate preparation and distribution of medications in accordance with facility, state, and national laws and regulations
- Assures compliance with HIPAA, DNV, OSHA and other state and federal regulations guiding healthcare
- Adheres to policies and procedures of UPH-DM
- Prioritizes the importance of preventing errors, accidents, and infections within the workplace and reports potential or actual concerns immediately
- Completes all competency and skills assessment requirements
- Participates in and completes pharmacy technician orientation
Qualifications
Education: Must be high school graduate or equivalent. Must be able to proficiently read, write and speak English. Must have strong math skills, with some basic algebra. Some college training preferred Experience: One year of experience in a hospital or retail pharmacy desirable. Experience in a health care facility desirable. Proficient in using computer systems License(s)/Certification(s): Must be registered as a Pharmacy Technician or Pharmacist-Intern (if enrolled in a college of pharmacy) with the Iowa Board of Pharmacy, prior to the commencement of employment. Must be a Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or other nationally recognized certification provider. Must maintain a current Iowa Pharmacy Technician or Pharmacist-Intern registration and be in good standing with the Iowa Board of Pharmacy. Must provide a photocopies of renewal certificates to the Pharmacy Management Team prior to the expiration dates of current certificates.
