Job Description

The Clinical Laboratory Consultant (laboratory technical consultant) is a licensed healthcare professional with extensive knowledge of laboratory procedures and regulations. The position provides expert advice and guidance to healthcare facilities, primarily focusing on ensuring the quality and accuracy of laboratory testing, proper test ordering, and accurate interpretation of results for patient diagnosis and treatment, while adhering to all relevant regulatory standards. The position's responsibilities may include on-site inspections, reviewing quality control practices, training staff, and recommending improvements to laboratory operations.

Job Functions:
  • Reviews laboratory procedures and quality control practices to ensure compliance with regulatory standards (e.g., CLIA) and accrediting body (COLA). Identifies areas for improvement.
  • Conducts on-site inspections of laboratories to assess equipment functionality, staff competency, safety protocols, and overall workflow efficiency.
  • Assures all require testing personnel has required competencies and documentation of such to meet COLA and CLIA standards/guidelines.
  • Maintains documentation and records to support compliance with CLIA and prepare for COLA inspections.
  • Identifies and resolves issues related to test performance, quality control, and reporting discrepancies.
  • Stays updated on relevant laboratory regulations and ensures that facilities maintain compliance with all applicable laws.
  • Reviews and reports proficiency testing to API and documents any variances; creates action plans of correction that demonstrate compliance with CLIA and COLA proficiency testing rules.
  • Supports testing personnel and serves as a resource for technical questions.

Education: Bachelor's degree in clinical laboratory sciences, medical technology, or related field required.

Licenses and Certification: Clinical Laboratory Scientist License and Clinical Laboratory Supervisor License required. Certified Laboratory Consultant by American Medical Technologists, preferred.
