Job Purpose
The Campus Communications Coordinator is responsible for coordinating and centralizing digital and print communications to university students and employees. This role involves managing internal communications channels, creating and disseminating digital content, and ensuring consistent messaging and branding across all platforms. The coordinator will work closely with various campus units to support the university's strategic goals and to enhance the clarity, timing and prioritization of communications to the campus community.
Minimum Requirements
A bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, public relations, or a related field is required. At least two years of professional work experience in one of the aforementioned fields is also required. Candidates with an equivalent combination of experience and/or education are encouraged to apply.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills, as well as strong organizational and project management abilities. Proficiency in using digital communication tools and platforms, such as email marketing software (e.g., MailChimp), graphic design tools (e.g., Canva), digital publishing platforms (WordPress), Microsoft 365 products, text messaging platforms, and AI writing assistance tools, is essential. Able to work collaboratively with diverse teams and manage multiple projects simultaneously. Attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining high-quality standards in all communications are also crucial. Ability to juggle multiple projects under deadlines and seek input from and incorporate constituent feedback.

Internal Communications

  • Serves as a key member of campus communications improvements and initiatives, and leads development of new policies and procedures governing campus communications.
  • Assists in the planning and execution of communication campaigns and special events such as virtual town halls for employees and students/families.
  • Serves as a point of contact for internal communication inquiries and provides support to university staff and students.
  • Creates, edits, and distributes digital content, including articles, emails, enewsletters, and administrative updates to campus.
  • Coordinates with different units across campus to gather information and ensure accurate and timely communication.
  • Provides support and serves as back-up for the curation and approval of campus calendar submissions.
  • Monitors and analyzes the effectiveness of campus communications through analytics, surveys and feedback from campus partners and makes recommendations for improvement.
  • Ensures campus communications adhere to the university's branding and style guidelines.

Editorial Support

  • Serves as a contributing writer for digital and print publications produced by the Office of Marketing and Communications, including, but not limited to, The College Today, Faculty and Staff News and College of Charleston Magazine.
  • Responsible for generating ideas and completing assigned articles that promote the College of Charleston, its programs and people. Ensures submitted copy is proof-read and free of grammatical errors and typos. Responds to editor feedback and questions and makes revisions as needed.

  • As a member of the Crisis Communications Team, supports the development and dissemination of communications to campus during emergencies such as hurricane evacuations, public health matters, and disruptions or adjustments to academic instruction and student life activities.
