Attention graduating seniors in the Spring 2025 class! The Life Underwriting role is an awesome opportunity to leverage a 4 year degree to train in a medical Underwriting role. This complex role is great for someone who is interested in the medical information industry, working in a fast-paced production environment. You will be reviewing applications and medical records, utilizing our Underwriting tools and your training for risk assessment of agent initiated applicants.

Training Details:

  • Training is 16-24 weeks
  • Core hours of operation: 8:00am - 4:15pm (Local time)

Work Arrangement:

  • Full-time work schedules are 38:45 hours per week, eligible for over-time pay for time worked over 40 hours
  • Overtime expected when needed
  • Schedules may include Saturdays, on occasion.
  • Bloomington, Richardson, and Tempe based candidates will be Hybrid with the expectation to be in the office at least 4-5 days per month (subject to change).
  • Ways of Working in office expectations during Training:
    • (Mon-Thurs), leadership will review to determine appropriate timing for transition to site specific expectation.
    • Week 1 of Onboarding
    • Week 1 of Burn-in
    • Week 1 of Retention earning
    • 3-4 days a week after retention is earned for 2-3 months minimum.
  • When working from home, this position will require stable, high-speed connections to the State Farm Network as an essential function of the job. In addition, an environment that is free from distractions (background noise, family members, and pets) to service our policyholders. This includes arrangements for dependent care as if you were working from a State Farm office location.

Incumbency: This position will have a 24-month incumbency period (beginning on the effective date of the position) which must be met before the employee can post for any other State Farm position. The incumbency period does not affect the at-will relationship between State Farm and the employee and does not create an employment contract, nor contractual rights.



Responsibilities

  • Review, process, and make decisions regarding Life insurance applications using risk-assessment tools in accordance with underwriting procedures, guidelines, and legislative requirements
  • Make quality decisions in a timely manner to assign proper underwriting risk classification
  • Demonstrate thorough knowledge in handling complex Life underwriting cases with minimal supervision
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with various internal and external contacts
  • Serve as a technical resource for agency personnel
  • Build a working knowledge of medical and non-medical risk factors and technical skills
  • Perform risk selection within assigned retention limits/authority guidelines
  • Build a working knowledge of Life/Health insurance products and compliance issues
  • Manage special projects, as assigned
  • Review underwriting processes and make recommendations for improvement
  • Manage multiple computer applications while maintaining quality records in a fast-paced, collaborative team environment
  • Mentor and train others


Qualifications

Our Underwriters must be able to successfully complete training in order to provide a remarkable customer experience by demonstrating the following skills:

  • Analyze and review lines of business to develop recommendations and assist our agents with achieving a profitable book of business
  • Responsible for proper pricing, placement and termination of risk within assigned levels of authority as well as acceptance continuation
  • Communicates clearly and professionally through remarkable customer service skills
  • Handles multiple computer applications while maintaining quality records in a fast-paced collaborative team environment
  • Bachelor's degree is strongly preferred in the areas of business, finance, medical, insurance, and/or education
  • Thrives on accountability to your team, your work and your schedule!
