Assistant Project Scientist - Donald Kohn Lab

UCLA's Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Molecular Genetics is seeking to fill a full-time Assistant Project Scientist position. The Assistant Project Scientist candidate will perform independent research on gene therapy for blood cell diseases. A Ph.D. (or equivalent) is required and 3-5 years of experience with translational cell and gene therapy research. The Assistant Project Scientist position is a 12-month non-Senate position.

Specific responsibilities for this position include but are not limited to:

1. Lead several translational research projects on gene editing in hematopoietic stem cells
2. Direct the activity of SRAs and graduate students and post-doctoral fellows working on the projects
3. Coordinate work with other labs involved in collaborative studies
4. Develop reports on project progress for funding agencies and regulatory entities.
5. Assist with development of research grant applications.
6. Lead development of scientific manuscripts for publication on the projects being performed.

Minimum Qualifications:

* Ph.D. (or equivalent) in biomedical sciences, molecular biology, cell biology or equivalent area

* Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in post-doctoral translational cell and gene therapy research.

* 3-5 years research experience in biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology and genomics in an academic setting or equivalent.

* Prior training and direct experience working with molecular biology and cell-based assays and culture systems.

* Extensive experience with recombinant DNA techniques, experimental hematology methods, cell culturing techniques, and quality control and regulatory requirements for presenting data to regulatory agencies.

Additional Preferred Qualifications:

* Experience with clinical trial development and performance and project management is strongly preferred.

Candidate Attributes:

* Ability to work on multiple projects efficiently and effectively.

* Ability to work independently on scientific projects.

* Prepare reports of laboratory investigations suitable for regulatory filings (e.g., with U.S. Food and Drug Administration).

* Preparation of manuscripts for publication in scientific journals.

* Required to communicate well with other scientists worldwide.

* The candidate will report directly to the Principal Investigator and will successfully direct the translational project with minimal to no supervision.

* The candidate will be required to complete all appropriate safety training as mandated by the campus' Environmental Health & Safety Office.
