Overview:

This is a research and development role ideal for a self-motivated individual to work hands-on with the latest in semiconductor equipment technology. The ideal candidate should have completed a Ph.D. degree related to semiconductor materials and devices. This Applications Scientist rolewill be a hands-on position, expected to maintain, operate, and monitor semiconductor deposition equipment. The person in this position will be expected to conduct crystal growth experiments using ultra-high vacuum equipment and perform analysis on characterization tools.

Responsibilities:



  • Work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team (sales, marketing, engineering, operations, etc.) to support MBE division commercial goals, product roadmapping, and needs of the customer base.
  • Operate state of the art semiconductor equipment including molecular beam epitaxy systems in Veeco's applications lab.
  • Execute experiments to improve growth processes, develop materials expertise, and test developmental hardware.
  • Support the development of new hardware designs from voice-of-customer to product release.
  • Make recommendations on product direction (hardware and software), working with sales and marketing to understand customer requirements.
  • Analyze test results and present summary reports on process development and material demonstrations.
  • Attend technical conferences and travel to customer sites to foster commercial engagements.
  • Interface with customers to gain insight regarding industry trends, emerging technologies, and scientific advancements.
  • Present technical data to customers in support of equipment sales and new product development.
  • On occasion, perform mechanical and electrical troubleshooting of equipment.
  • Learn relevant software programs, including scripting languages, to execute process testing and growth runs.
  • Operate and perform preventative maintenance on Veeco equipment and various types of metrology equipment (AFM, XRD, ellipsometer, profilometer, microscopes, etc.).
  • Work with various types of chemicals (solvents, acids, bases), on an occasional basis, in a fume hood environment.
  • Adhere to all Veeco safety policies and guidelines.


Qualifications:

Ph.D. in physics, electrical engineering, or materials science; or a Master's degree in one of these fields, with 2+ years of experience in the field of molecular beam epitaxy or related technologies.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:



  • Strong technical skills and ability to understand complex scientific concepts are required.
  • Experience with metrology equipment such as SEM, AFM, XRD, XRF, RBS, SIMS, ellipsometry, surface particle measurements, profilometer, or any other semiconductor film characterization techniques is valued.
  • Proficient computer skills, including MS Office (Word and Excel) and ability to learn other software packages for equipment operation and data collection.
  • Must possess strong interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal) to interact with colleagues and customers as well as document activities, procedures, and best-known practices.
  • Must have ability to work independently to achieve goals.
  • Willingness and ability to follow procedures and adhere to safety protocols.
  • Ability to work in clean-room attire and wear appropriate safety gear (PPE) as required.



The expected salary range for this position is $83,659 - $105,968, plus bonus opportunity.
