DESCRIPTION OF WORK

In this position, you will be responsible for repairing and servicing a variety of vehicles, such as cars, trucks, and tractors, along with equipment like sweepers and front-end loaders. Your tasks will include replacing shock absorbers, transmissions, and brakes, as well as balancing wheels, checking alignment, and performing minor body repairs. You will also overhaul and test alternators and electrical systems, implement a preventative maintenance program, and conduct diagnostics, tune-ups, and tire changes. Conducting state inspections for safety and emissions is crucial, ensuring vehicles comply with standards. You will perform necessary repairs, conduct road tests, and complete inspection paperwork, including placing inspection stickers on vehicles. Using diagnostic tools, you will identify equipment issues and determine the right repair methods and parts.

You will maintain motorized hand tools like chain saws and compressors, reporting any missing or broken parts as needed. Keeping your work area clean and safe is essential, following safety procedures and using protective gear. Staying alert to potential hazards and taking steps to prevent accidents is important, as is reporting any personal injuries immediately to seek treatment. You will make routine adjustments for safe operation and reduced wear on equipment, conduct minor repairs and maintenance, and demonstrate repair methods to team members while assisting Diesel Mechanics with major repairs. Accurate record-keeping of equipment maintenance is required, and you must ensure a safe work environment by adhering to safety protocols. Observing conditions, making adjustments, and communicating findings effectively, both in writing and verbally, is part of your responsibilities. You will remain vigilant about risks in the work area, help others avoid hazards, and promptly report injuries and equipment accidents to ensure proper care.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment.
  • Work hours are 7:00 am to 3:00 pm, Monday - Friday, with 30-minute lunch.
  • Winter shifts are 4:00 AM to 12:00 PM or 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM
  • Travel, overtime and shift work required. Work hours subject to change based on seasonal requirements and operational needs.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Successful completion of the commonwealth's Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic Trainee program; or
  • Two years of journey level mechanic experience in the diagnosis and repair of automobiles, heavy trucks, or construction equipment, which includes one year of experience in the diagnosis and repair of diesel vehicles or equipment; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Special Requirements:

  • This position requires possession of a valid Class A or Class B Commercial Driver's License.
  • This position requires possession of a valid Medical Examiner's Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations.

Conditions of Employment:

  • All employees must obtain an active certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in the operation of heavy trucks and loaders within the probationary period.
  • Employees may be required to obtain and maintain CDL endorsements and certifications necessary to operate specific pieces of equipment.
  • Certain positions may require employees to possess a valid Pennsylvania Class 1, 4, or 7 Inspection Mechanic Certification on the first day of employment.
  • This position requires operation of vehicles or equipment with a manual transmission.
  • This position is subject to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with Federal Regulations.
