Chief Quality Officer

West Virginia University (WVU) School of Medicine seeks a new Chief Quality Officer for West Virginia University Hospitals/University Health Associates. This is an exceptional leadership opportunity for a physician with an unwavering commitment to excellence in clinical care, education, and research.

SUMMARY:

The Chief Quality Officer (CQO) of WVU Hospitals (WVUH) directs the implementation and operations of the WVUH quality, patient safety, and patient experience programs across the spectrum of care. The CQO will develop guidelines and policies, implement, and monitor standards, re-engineer care pathways, and innovate to continuously improve the quality of care. The CQO will serve as the bridge between WVUH quality efforts and system-wide improvement. In addition, the CQO will collaborate with other leaders to develop a value-based model of care.

ALLOCATION OF TIME: This position is expected to require 80% administrative effort and 20% clinical effort.

Core Duties and Responsibilities:

1.In collaboration with the System CQO, provides the overall guidance and leadership in implementing quality programs for WVU Hospitals

2.Chairs the WVUH Quality Executive Council and develops guidelines for quality and patient safety data.

3.Provides leadership, teaches, motivates, and assists in the implementation of quality programs in the clinical setting.

4.Identifies and implements unique and innovative initiatives aimed at improving clinical quality and patient safety.

5.Improves reporting of quality metrics to leaders and increases real-time reporting.

6.Recognizes potential barriers to implementation and develops a roll-out strategy with the assistance of the local staff and leadership.

7.Directs the development of policies related to quality and safety.

8.Leads the maintenance of quality assurance standards.

9.Oversees activities to enhance Patient Experience at WVUH

10.Assists with efforts to maintain regulatory compliance.

11.Assists in the development of metrics for provider ongoing professional practice evaluation (OPPE).

12.Oversees the preparation and monitoring of budgets and expenses within area of responsibility.

13.Works closely with other groups implementing various parts of WVUH strategy.

14.Serves as the primary spokesperson for the communication of quality and patient safety strategies to outside entities.

15.Works closely with project teams to ensure that a standard implementation approach is developed and used across all WVUH entities.

16.Improves the performance of WVUH and its component entities on external benchmarking systems including Vizient and US News and World Report.

17.Works with physician groups and service lines on quality initiatives.

18.Leads continuous improvement programs and helps develop a culture of continuous improvement and excellence.

19.Collaborates with the System Chief Quality Officer and other executives and engages with leaders and clinicians throughout the organization in a hands-on fashion to build quality, safety, efficiency, effectiveness, and a sense of shared accountability.

20.Takes a clinical leadership role in evaluating care delivery and developing the infrastructure for improvement.

21.Strengthens the data and information capabilities of the organization and champions a data-driven environment.

22.Develops and leads educational opportunities in clinical quality and patient safety for healthcare workers.

23.Engages in scholarship related to clinical quality and/or patient safety and disseminates results through presentations and publications to augment the regional and national reputation of WVUH and WVU Medicine.

24.Performs other related tasks identified by the WVUH Executive Leadership Team

25.Maintains active clinical practice and maintenance of certification in his/her specialty area.

Skills Required:

1.Knowledge of current regulatory requirements and trends relating to quality and pay-for-performance.

2.Extensive knowledge of both clinical medicine and hospital operations.

3.Ability to manage, teach, motivate, and generate enthusiasm for healthcare quality and safety initiatives.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education, Certification, and/or Licensure:

Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy from an accredited medical school.
Certified by the American Board of Medical Specialties or the American Osteopathic Association.
Hold or able to obtain medical licensure in the State of West Virginia by start date.
Obtain active clinical staff privileges at WVU Hospitals prior to start date.

Experience:

Five years post-training clinical experience in a healthcare setting.
Three years quality and patient safety experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Education, Certification, and/or Licensure:

Formal training in clinical quality, clinical epidemiology, and/or patient safety; and/or an advanced degree (MPH, MBA, MHA).

Experience:

Quality and patient safety experience in an academic medical center.
