Position Description

ENSCO is seeking a Staff Railway Research Engineerwith exceptional expertise in transportation research, computational design, advanced instrumentation, and innovation within the surface transportation and energy industries. This position supports ENSCO's mission of advancing transportation technology through groundbreaking research and product innovation.

Efforts will focus on a wide variety of initiatives, including:
* Vehicle Testing and Modeling: Ride quality, braking performance, noise/vibration levels, crashworthiness, and vehicle dynamics optimization.
* Energy Transition Research: Analysis of battery-electric, hydrogen-electric, and hybrid locomotive technologies, including lifecycle and cost modeling.
* Development of Advanced Instrumentation: Design and implementation of instrumentation using advanced and emerging technologies including but not limited to "internet of things" (IoT), microcontroller-based systems, three-dimensional scanning and wireless sensors.
* Geotechnical Infrastructure: Advanced evaluations of railway substructure performance using innovative tools and methodologies.
* Vehicle/Track Interaction: Modeling, simulation, and advanced testing of rail and track infrastructure.
* Condition Monitoring: Design and deployment of IoT systems and sensors for infrastructure performance evaluation.
* Digital Twins and Simulation Tools: Development of computational models, software pipelines, and user interfaces for transportation system optimization.
* Human Factors: Assess operational safety and ergonomics to improve system safety.

Responsibilities
Participation in these efforts includes:
* Developing detailed research plans, test protocols, and technical briefings for a range of stakeholders.
* Conducting and leading field research, testing, and evaluation at TTC and client locations.
* Analyzing large-scale datasets using computational tools (e.g., Python, GIS, TensorFlow).
* Authoring and publishing research papers, technical reports, and conference presentations.
* Managing and mentoring multidisciplinary research teams, including assigning work and managing budgets.
* Supporting the establishment of research agendas for federal, commercial, and international clients.
* Collaborating with ENSCO's product development team to commercialize research findings into innovative solutions.

Qualifications Required:
* BS in Civil, Computer or Transportation Engineering or related field
* Minimum of 7 years of professional experience in transportation research, computational design, instrumentation development, energy/transportation systems analysis, and railway engineering
* Experience with designing and implementing customized instrumentation suites.
* Proven track record of authoring technical reports, research papers, and presentations at industry conferences.
* Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
* Strong written and verbal communication skills.
* Capacity to establish and maintain professional relationships with clients, colleagues, and supervisors.
* Willingness to travel up to 10% of the time for research and testing activities.
Railroad Regulations:
* Must pass an e-RAILSAFE security background check and online safety training to work on railroad properties.
* Compliance with safety requirements, including wearing provided safety equipment (hardhat, steel-toe boots, vest, protective eyewear).

Qualifications Desired:
* Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering, or a related scientific discipline.
* Demonstrated leadership in professional organizations within the transportation or rail industry.
* Experience in energy modeling, Internet of Things platforms, Intelligent Transportation Systems, and digital twin technology.
* Active contributor to industry research, including publications, presentations, and leadership roles in industry groups.
