Job Summary

#CA-DS

Position is responsible for overseeing the development, implementation, maintenance, inventory adjustments, training and troubleshooting of the Pyxis medication distribution system and related automation in support of the functions of the pharmacy department. Serves as lead technician for implementation of new pharmacy automation projects. Functions as pharmacy automation technician for pharmacy automation or computer system inputs, outputs, data analysis and controlled substance surveillance. Serves as a staff educator regarding automation system functions, optimization, bugs, enhancements, problem-solving, etc. Works with management to collect data and establish policies, procedures, standards, and objectives for automated systems and processes with a goal of increasing employee efficiency and effectiveness. The technician staff are responsible for drug storage, preparation and distribution of medications throughout UCDMC under the supervision of a pharmacist, and performs maintenance and inventory functions.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position.

  • California Licensed Pharmacy Technician
  • Experience in automation system and inventory management (e.g., Pyxis, CIIsafe, Pyxis Logistics, Anesthesia).
  • Experience overseeing, training and leading pharmacy technicians and students.
  • Skill in and ability to collect and analyze monthly workload statistics.
  • Skill in and ability to collect and analyze Pyxis metrics to ensure ongoing optimization of systems.
  • Skill in and ability to effectively communicate and plan with other areas of the department.
  • Skill in, knowledge of, and ability to utilize the Pyxis System and EMR for billing, problem solving, and data retrieval.
  • Basic computer software and network skills.
  • Ability to perform pharmacy calculations accurately.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
  • Problem-solving skills to independently recognize and define a problem, identify the resources available to help solve the problem, create and implement viable solutions, and follow through to ensure the problem is resolved to the satisfaction of all parties.
  • Ability to self-motivate in order to complete tasks and work with minimal supervision, yet to recognize when it is appropriate to seek assistance from others when limits of authority have been reached.
  • Decision-making skills to independently exercise delegated authority to take action, and to recognize when it is appropriate to seek assistance from others when limits of delegated authority have been reached.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Pharmacy Technician Board Certification (CPhT)
  • Experience in project planning.
  • Experience with the implementation, design and validation of new automation systems.
  • Experience in an inpatient pharmacy setting.

The Department of Pharmacy is a dynamic, integral, and critical part of patient care provided by UC Davis Health. As a department of greater than 600 professional, technical, and administrative support personnel, we focus on providing patient-centered medication management that optimizes outcomes through practice, education, research, and leadership through the continuum of care. We also have the largest pharmacy residency program in the country with 46 total residents in 13 different programs.

The Department of Pharmacy offers comprehensive pharmaceutical services (unit dose, IV admixtures, clinical services, infusion pumps, and teaching) throughout the health system complex 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The pharmacy services encompass inpatient pharmacy services as well as an expansive footprint in the ambulatory care space where we have clinical pharmacists embedded within our clinics and specialty care locations. Our operational teams support the health system enterprise with three inpatient pharmacies, five outpatient pharmacies, two infusion pharmacies, a home infusion service line, and the full complement of pharmacy purchasing, stores, and distribution.
