Job Summary

The Quality Nurse Specialist at the UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center plays a pivotal role in ensuring the delivery of high-quality care to patients undergoing treatment for cancer. Tasked with overseeing and optimizing clinical processes, this role involves collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to develop and implement quality improvement initiatives. The Quality Nurse conducts assessments to identify areas for enhancement, establishes performance metrics, and monitors outcomes to uphold standards of excellence in patient care.

The Quality Nurse Specialist ensures adherence to Commission on Cancer Standards (CoC) and promoting excellence in cancer care. Tasked with spearheading quality improvement efforts, this role involves collaborating with various stakeholders to develop, implement, and evaluate initiatives aimed at enhancing patient outcomes and experiences. The incumbent conducts regular audits and assessments to ensure compliance with CoC requirements, identifies areas for improvement, and leads the implementation of evidence-based practices. Additionally, they provide education and training to staff members, serve as a resource for CoC-related inquiries, and facilitate the accreditation process. By championing a culture of continuous improvement and patient-centered care, the Quality Nurse Specialist plays a crucial role in maintaining the CoC accreditation and elevating the standard of cancer care delivery within the institution.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • Valid California Registered Nurse License without restriction.
  • Graduation from an accredited school of Nursing
  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing required
  • Minimum three (3) years RN experience with at least one (1) year experience in clinical quality improvement.
  • Experience in data analysis, quality improvement, and comprehensive knowledge of professional concepts and industry practices.
  • Knowledge and experience with determining benchmarks for institutional clinical monitors in conjunction with physicians and leadership.
  • Working knowledge of Commission on Cancer and Joint Commission.
  • Expert knowledge of the methods, concepts, systems, and operational issues in clinical QI.
  • Expert knowledge of QI models, tools, and techniques, including collection, abstraction, validation, analysis, reporting of data, and the development and application of performance and benchmark indicators.
  • Highly developed skills and expertise in project management, with demonstrated ability to initiate projects and lead teams, prioritize tasks, and direct projects successfully from inception to completion on task and on schedule.
  • Ability to lead complex projects with critical impact throughout the UC Davis Health.
  • Expert ability to use highly-developed critical thinking and problem-solving skills to manage multiple levels of information and responsibilities, and to quickly diagnose and resolve extremely complex issues, and to develop and implement timely and effective solutions.
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills for collaborating effectively with all levels of clinical and technical staff and representatives of external regulatory agencies, and for mentoring and training lower-level QI staff.
  • Highly developed ability to effectively convey complex clinical, technical, and educational information both verbally and in writing, and to produce high quality reports, documentation, and presentations.
  • Expert knowledge of various administrative and business software packages, and of the specialized applications for quality data management.
  • Expert ability to collaborate effectively with staff, management, and clinicians at all levels and across departments.

Department Specific Job Scope

Quality Improvement Initiatives: Develop and implement quality improvement projects aimed at enhancing patient outcomes, safety, and satisfaction within the cancer center. This may involve analyzing data, identifying areas for improvement, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to implement evidence-based practices.

Compliance and Accreditation: Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and accreditation standards set forth by organizations such as the Commission on Cancer (CoC). This includes conducting regular audits, maintaining documentation, and facilitating the accreditation process.

Performance Measurement and Reporting: Establish performance metrics and indicators to monitor and evaluate the quality of care delivered within the cancer center. Generate reports to track progress, identify trends, and communicate findings to stakeholders.

Clinical Documentation and Record Keeping: Ensure accurate and complete documentation of patient care activities, outcomes, and quality improvement initiatives. Collaborate with healthcare providers to optimize electronic health record systems for quality reporting and documentation purposes.

Risk Management and Patient Safety: Identify potential risks to patient safety and develop strategies to mitigate them. Collaborate with risk management teams to investigate adverse events, implement corrective actions, and prevent future occurrences.

Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Work closely with members of the interdisciplinary team, including physicians, nurses, administrators, and support staff, to promote a collaborative approach to quality improvement and patient-centered care.

Research and Evidence-Based Practice: Stay abreast of current research, guidelines, and best practices in oncology nursing and quality improvement. Incorporate evidence-based practices into quality improvement initiatives and share knowledge with colleagues to drive innovation and improvement.
