What you'll be doing...

Verizon is seeking an experienced and talented attorney to join the Verizon Privacy Office. The group's primary practice area includes US and international privacy matters for all Verizon business units. In this role, the Privacy Counsel will provide counseling on a broad range of privacy topics including product development, compliance, international data transfers, privacy assessments, and drafting and negotiating data privacy terms. This individual will counsel multiple internal client groups and support several Privacy Office initiatives.

Responsibilities of the job include:

  • Counseling and providing guidance to legal and business partners regarding US state and federal privacy laws, international privacy laws, industry self-regulatory programs, Verizon's internal and external privacy policies, and best privacy practices

  • Conducting thorough privacy legal reviews for new and evolving products and services and providing ongoing privacy legal support throughout product/service lifecycle.

  • Providing legal guidance and support for all aspects of product development including overseeing ongoing privacy compliance obligations.

  • Managing the content of Verizon's consumer privacy policies to ensure consistency with business practices and compliance with applicable privacy laws.

  • Partnering with the Privacy Compliance Operations and Global Technology Solutions teams to implement compliance requirements.

  • Developing and delivering privacy training to employees.

  • Assessing privacy risks for supplier and strategic partner relationships.

  • Drafting and negotiating data privacy terms in supplier and partner agreements.

  • Analyzing international data transfers for compliance with international privacy laws.

  • Effectively partnering with key compliance stakeholders including Internal Audit, Chief Compliance Officer/Legal Compliance, Enterprise Risk Management, Privacy Compliance Operations, HR, Learning & Development, and VCG and VBG Legal Compliance.

What we're looking for...

You'll need to have:

  • JD degree and six or more years of relevant work experience.

  • Member in good standing of a bar of at least one state.

  • Three years experience as a practicing attorney.

  • General knowledge of US state and federal privacy laws, international privacy laws and best privacy practices.

  • Understanding of and commitment to the principles of privacy and security by design.

Even better if you have one or more of the following:

  • Experience in-house, with a firm or at a regulatory agency focused on issues related to U.S. privacy or data protection

  • IAPP CIPP-US Certification.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to interact effectively within the Verizon Legal organization and with business partners at all levels.

  • Ability to explain complex legal concepts and requirements to non-legal professionals.

  • Strong business acumen including broad knowledge and perspective on the business and the ability to identify future trends and their consequences accurately.

  • Ability to analyze and devise solutions to legal issues under tight deadlines and with limited supervision.

  • Team player with strong interpersonal and relationship management skills to navigate effectively in a matrixed organization, interact comfortably with personnel in various roles and levels across the organization, and enforce legal requirements without alienating clients.

For part-timers, your coverage will vary as you may be eligible for some of these benefits depending on your individual circumstances. If you are hired into a California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Minnesota, Nevada, New York, Rhode Island, Washington or Washington, D.C. work location, the compensation range for this position is between $151,000.00 and $280,000.00 annually based on a full-time schedule. The salary will vary depending on your location and confirmed job-related skills and experience. This is an incentive based position with the potential to earn more. For part time roles, your compensation will be adjusted to reflect your hours.
