Primary Purpose of Department |
The Office of Institutional Effectiveness and Analytics (
OIEA) is charged by the Provost and Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs to:
- Collect, validate and analyze data required for external reporting;
- disseminate needed and requested data for internal planning and for assessment of institutional programs;
- conduct special studies on various aspects of the institution;
- provide assistance to others within the University who are engaged in research or conducting campus-wide surveys; and
- provide assistance to the campus regarding planning and assessment processes, SACS accreditation compliance.
As a unit within the division of Academic Affairs, the office is accessible to all academic programs and is close to the planning process established by the Provost. Although much of its work is related to the academic side of the institution, units in the other University divisions as well as the Chancellor's Office regularly require services of the
OIEA. The staff also assists other members of the University community who wish to conduct institutional studies.
OIEA services may include developing research techniques, providing required raw data, or participating in the compilation, analysis and presentation of the study. In accordance with fundamental quality improvement, the office assists the campus with internal planning, assessment, evaluation and accreditation. The
OIEA also provides campus-wide consultation regarding
SACS requirements and standards. Finally,
OIEA has responsibility for institutional reporting to external agencies such as The University of North Carolina System Office and the U.S. Department of Education. |
Primary Purpose of Position |
This position will primarily be tasked to operationalize and maintain the developed visualizations and analysis reports within the department. This function will require the development, documentation and management of the data flows associated with these reports. A secondary function of this position will be to manage and build the Tableau user base and experience across campus. This function will involve the development of a campus user group, organize informal education experiences, create user documentation and develop a central website for users to access Tableau use documentation. |
Summary of Position Responsibilities |
- Maintain existing standard datasets, reports, models and dashboards.
- Develop new dashboards or models from existing datasets.
- Develop and maintain a data dictionary for OIEA datasets that support department dashboards and reports.
- Manage Tableau Server user lists and desktop licenses.
- Assist other OIEA members in the identification of internal and external data sources.
- Participate in the campus user group to help develop campus proficiency with Tableau.

Minimum Education/Experience |
Four-year degree in a discipline related to the field assigned and one year of related training or experience, or a combination of training and experience necessary to perform the work. |
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience |
- Experience in a University setting (especially in a Banner Environment).
- Previous experience with Tableau Software products (Prep, Desktop and Server).
- Proven skills in the use of a data management/cleaning software tool such as WebFocus, SAS, R or Matlab.
- Knowledge of relational databases and web development.
- A master's degree in a related field or bachelor's degree in a related field with two years of data analysis experience.
- Good communication and presentations skills.
