This compensated one year internship will focus on quality activities in support of cell and gene therapy within the UCSF Investigational Cellular Therapy Group at the Human Islets and Cellular Transplantation Facility (HICTF). Quality control activities include the design and conducting of experimental systems, developing new assay systems, testing and qualifying protocols, establishment of performance specifications, and documentation. Quality Control Interns may be assigned duties within a single discipline.

The Department of Laboratory Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented individual to join our team. The successful candidate will join a highly skilled quality team within the UCSF Investigational Cellular Therapy Group that is pushing the boundaries of medicine by developing, engineering, and manufacturing promising new cell therapy products for a variety of indications including cancer, autoimmunity, infectious disease, and inherited hematologic and immune disorders. In this role, you will play a crucial part in qality support of viral and non-viral gene editing approaches. The successful candidate will work closely with a multidisciplinary team of scientists and researchers to contribute to the advancement of cutting-edge cell-based therapies.

• Ability to interact with multiple facets of the cell & gene therapy industry.
• Mixture of didactic and hands-on training from the QC and QA functions within ICT.

Some examples are as follows:

o Quality Control

PCR, flow cytometry, analytical assay development, product safety testing.

Aseptic technique, cell culture, cryopreservation of cells, environmental monitoring, materials procurement, inspection, and release, stability testing, protocol development and report writing.

o Quality Assurance

Knowledge and enforcement of GMP/GDocP, federal regulations/requirements, FACT and industry standards, and Quality Management System (QMS) maintenance and improvement.

o Other

Involvement in quality improvement and/or research projects, participation in meetings and other group functions, Human Subjects Protection training program

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree (or equivalent degree) in a relevant scientific discipline (biology, bioengineering, or related field) or at least four years of research experience.
• Strong understanding of cell biology and basic laboratory techniques.
• Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Working knowledge necessary to begin independent application of principles, practices and procedures in the completion of assignments of moderate complexity
• Organizational abilities and decision-making to prioritize work assignments.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work in a collaborative manner, to assist in identifying any challenges or barriers.
• Eagerness to learn and contribute to the development of innovative cell-based therapies.
• Candidates must meet all of the required qualifications at the time of appointment.

Preferred Qualifications:

• A bachelor's degree.
• Experience with cell culture techniques and aseptic processing.
• Knowledge of statistical analysis software.
• Previous internship or research experience in a related field.
• Familiarity with GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) guidelines.
