Overview

The outpatient dietitian provides nutrition services to individuals in an outpatient setting for nutrition-related problems, preventative health measures and chronic disease management. Assesses nutritional needs, develops and implements nutritional care plans, and evaluates and reports these results appropriately. Conducts markets, and presents good nutrition practices and the Nutrition Center to physicians, patients, and other health professionals.


Responsibilities

Clinical Excellence/Patient Care:

  • Assesses nutrition status of patient and based on this evaluation, plans, implements, and evaluates appropriate cost effective nutrition care of clients.
  • Provides nutrition education counseling for patients and/ or significant others.
  • Maintains a high level of competence while applying current research information and methods into nutrition care of clients.
  • Develops and implements an individualized plan for nutrition intervention in accordance with the patient's medical program goals and objectives, nutrition prescription, and self-management training. Assists patient in developing realistic, long term health goals and goal-directed behaviors.
  • Care Coordination:

    • Coordinates nutrition care of clients with physician and other health professionals.
    • Conducts and markets nutrition information and programs of the Blank Children's Pediatric Clinics.
      • Basic UPH Performance Criteria:
      • Continues professional development and involvement in professional activities that enhance nursing practice by sharing knowledge through networking and research.
      • Demonstrates the UnityPoint Health Values and Standards of Behaviors as well as adheres to policies and procedures and safety guidelines.
      • Demonstrates ability to meet business needs of department with regular, reliable attendance.
      • Employee maintains current licenses and/or certifications required for the position.
        • Practices and reflects knowledge of HIPAA, JCAHO, DNV, OSHA, CMS and other federal/state regulatory agencies guiding healthcare.
        • Completes all annual education and competency requirements within the designated time frame.
        • Is knowledgeable of hospital and department compliance requirements for federally funded healthcare programs (e.g. Medicare and Medicaid) regarding fraud, waste and abuse. Brings any questions or concerns regarding compliance to the immediate attention of hospital administrative staff. Takes appropriate action on concerns reported by department staff related to compliance.
        • This position may be assigned a specific mission to address in an emergency situation to assist in disaster response and recovery as part of the UPHDM Hospital Emergency Incident Command System. Situations of a critical nature may require an individual to perform multiple tasks until additional support can be obtained.
        • Demonstrates initiative to improve quality and customer service by striving to exceed expectations.

Qualifications
  • EDUCATION:
  • Registered and Licensed Dietitian and maintain Registration/ Licensure.
  • Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university with a major in foods, human nutrition, or dietetics; food service management; or institution management.
  • EXPERIENCE:
    • Requires a minimum of one year experience as a clinical dietitian.
    • Experience and feel comfortable at public speaking.
      • Experience as an outpatient dietitian preferred.
      • LICENSURE/REGISTRATION/CERTIFICATION:
      • Registered and licensed dietitian.
      • KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
      • Writes, reads, comprehends and speaks fluent English.

        Multicultural sensitivity.

        Microsoft Office - basic computer skills.

        Customer/patient focused.

        Critical thinking skills using independent judgment in making decisions.

        Use of usual and customary equipment used to perform essential functions of the position.
