Job Description

The Department of Biomedical Sciences seeks an outstanding candidate for a temporary Research Assistant position at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine. The selected candidate will be an integral member of a perinatal research team that focuses on understanding the biological and genetic consequences of pre-term birth and neonatal drug exposure in human and animal models. They will be responsible for assisting with molecular, cell culture/biology, biochemistry, and microscopy experiments. The individual will be trained to manage a colony. This position will assist in maintaining laboratory equipment, maintain laboratory safety, train students and other laboratory personnel, order routine supplies, summarize and archive data.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Has knowledge of basic molecular techniques, including DNA, RNA and protein western blot, polymerase chain reaction. Can independently prepare or supervises preparation of samples for analysis or testing after laboratory training.
  2. Has knowledge of basic cardiac and central nervous system histological procedures including tissue isolation and processing for cryo-sectioning or paraffin sectioning. Immunostaining.
  3. Cell culture experience, passaging, freezing and thawing cells, incubator maintenance.
  4. Basic microscopy including light and fluorescence microscopy.
  5. Independently performs experiments or analyses, ability to problem solving and trouble shoot.
  6. Basic understanding of statistics and knowledge of data analysis using excel, SPSS or GraphPad.
  7. Maintains laboratory records, prepares graphs and figures using photoshop.
  8. Is responsible for maintaining laboratory equipment, instruments, and microscopes.
  9. Assists in the training of students or residents/fellows in basic laboratory skills.
  10. Understanding of basic biological and chemical laboratory safety.
  11. Participates in laboratory meetings and discussions.
  12. Maintains a positive laboratory atmosphere.

This is temporary 5-month, unranked non tenure track position

Qualifications

  1. Bachelor's or equivalent degree in a biology, chemistry, physics, anatomy or related clinical field. Preference given to experience in molecular, cell biology, microscopy, or histology experience. Experience in neuroscience and/or genetics/genomics is a preferred qualification.
  2. Proven ability to evaluate and produce reliable results, problem-solve and trouble shoot complex problems.
  3. Knowledge of state-of-the-art technology appropriate to biological experiments.
  4. Ability to maintain and trouble-shoot problems with laboratory equipment.
  5. Knowledge of basic computer programs, for example word, excel, Photoshop, or PowerPoint preferred.
