The Cancer Center of Kansas (CCK) is seeking a full-time, on-site Medical Assistant to join our team in our Wichita, KS offices. The typical work week is Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM with no major holidays, no on-call and no weekends.

What does this position entail?

This role, under direct supervision, is responsible for assisting with patient care, documentation, and disinfection of clinical areas. The position requires excellent customer service skills and the ability to take directives from clinical staff and providers to assist in providing high-quality and personalized patient care. Promotes efficient patient flow and patient care, i.e. exams, and procedures. Supports and adheres to the US Oncology Compliance Program, including the Code of Ethics and Business Standards.


Responsibilities

The essential duties and responsibilities of this position are:

  • Escort patients to and from exam rooms, physician offices, and treatment areas as needed.
  • Record patient data prior to physician visits, including vital signs, height, weight, allergies, and medication changes.
  • Obtain necessary patient records required by the physician before treatments or procedures.
  • Prepare and stock exam/treatment rooms; order supplies as needed.
  • Assist physicians with exams and procedures upon request.
  • Administer subcutaneous and intramuscular injections as delegated by RN or physician.
  • Maintain disinfection protocols for exam/treatment rooms.
  • Answer patient calls and refer to physicians, nurses, or pharmacists as appropriate.
  • Phone in prescriptions and make other patient calls as directed by physicians and RNs.
  • Inform physicians of patient reschedules and no-shows.
  • Perform administrative duties, such as typing, filing, faxing, and chart preparation.
  • Help maintain patient flow during office visits, monitor check-in status, and communicate updates to providers.
  • Provide wheelchair assistance and demonstrate proper body mechanics for patient transfers.
  • Record pertinent patient data into the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) for each visit.
  • Utilize EMR and Practice Management System (PMS) for visit results and appointment confirmations.
  • Request additional medical supplies from Support Services as necessary.
  • Understand and comply with OSHA guidelines.
  • Assist with exams, procedures, or treatment preparation as requested.
  • Provide excellent customer service by ensuring patient comfort and prompt service.
  • Communicate professionally with providers and management.
  • Comply with policies and procedures related to clinical areas.
  • Collaborate professionally with other departments as needed.
  • Follow documentation policies for medical assistant workflows in applicable software systems.
  • Understand and protect patient confidentiality and HIPAA Privacy regulations.
  • Cross-train in other clinical or administrative functions as needed.
  • Remains current on all compliance requirements and in part, demonstrates knowledge of Adheres to confidentiality, state, federal, and HIPPA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) laws and guidelines with regards to patient's records and information.
  • Attends required, applicable meetings.
  • Remains current on all compliance requirements.
  • Ensures all applicable policies and procedures of the company and Network are followed.
  • Other duties as requested or assigned including coverage within the department.
  • Performs other tasks as reasonably requested by a provider or member of the Management Team, as applicable to the role.
  • Perform other tasks as reasonably requested.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate for the position will have the following qualifications:

Basic Work Requirements:

  • Ability to perform basic computer functions and is familiar with Microsoft Office Applications.
  • Ability to enter data into electronic systems while maintaining the integrity and accuracy of the data.
  • Ability to type a minimum of 40 wpm is preferred.
  • Ability to operate a multiline phone system and utilize appropriate phone etiquette.
  • Possesses strong customer service skills and professionalism.

Personal Traits:

  • Comfortable working in a team environment but maintains responsibility for individual and assigned clinical area's performance.
  • Displays a positive demeanor toward patients, coworkers, and responsibilities.

Education and or Experience:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum one year experience in a medical office environment as a medical assistant is preferred or,
  • Certificate of graduation from an accredited program for Medical Assistants preferred.

Certificates, Licenses or Registrations:

  • Certified Medical Assistant certification from an accredited program preferred. Experience as medical or nursing assistant in a clinical setting may be substituted for certification.

Physical Demands of the Job:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Work may require sitting for long periods of time; also stooping, bending, and stretching for objects and supplies. Occasionally lifting objects or paper weighing up to 30 pounds. Requires manual dexterity sufficient to operate a keyboard, calculator, telephone, copier and other office equipment. Vision must be correctable to 20/20 and hearing must be in the normal range for telephone contacts. It is necessary to view and type on computer screens for prolonged periods of time. Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity, and eye-hand coordination. Requires standing and walking for extensive periods of time. Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 40 lbs. Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range.
