Position Summary

The Department of Radiology is seeking a dynamic candidate to serve as a Full-time Sr. Radiologic Tech/Specialist to be responsible for planning, developing, implementing and managing complex radiologic research procedures for clinical trials. This position will be responsible for developing specific imaging parameters on a variety of imaging modalities and platforms. They will prepare for radiologic imaging procedures according to protocol, determine appropriate methodology and techniques to use in administering procedures and implementing and overseeing complex clinical imaging trials. Responsible for coordinating clinical trials for the Human Imaging Research Core (HIRC). This position will document study specific requirements and develop standard operating procedures (SOPs), provide research support for clinical trials conducted through the New Mexico Cancer Care Alliance (NMCCA) and the UNM Cancer Center, and attends Radiology Research Steering Committee meetings. In addition, they will participate in contract and MOU development with internal and external partners. The position will help develop clinical research budgets and operating procedures and will coordinate the acquisition of research images in a research setting. They will coordinate research patient care services as appropriate for imaging trials and oversee the scheduling, imaging and billing aspects of clinical research.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Participates and coordinates clinical trials for the Human Imaging Research Core (HIRC)
  • Plans, develops, and implements clinical imaging protocols on all Radiology imaging modalities (e.g., MRI, CT, ultrasound, etc.).
  • Develops administrative and logistical procedures for study coordinators, radiology technologists, radiology schedulers, and investigators.
  • Documents study requirements in study-specific binders that are located at each clinical scanner. Coordinates the activities of a multi-disciplinary team of research coordinators, clinical radiology technologists, radiology schedulers, medical physicists, and support staff.
  • Coordinates patient registration, scheduling, and billing functions for clinical imaging research.
  • Ensures that all clinical imaging activities are carried out in accordance with established research imaging protocol as evidenced by developing trial specific training and education, audit or post-procedure review, and review of clinical systems such as EMR and PACS for accuracy.
  • Assesses operational requirements for the trial by participating in, leading, or coordinating site feasibility visits/reviews in coordination with radiology technologists/supervisors, research coordinators, and CTSC Data Warehouse Honest Brokers.
  • Assess financial requirements by reviewing research protocols and developing budget estimates and preparing operational budgets for clinical trials with imaging needs.
  • Provide information for and verify accuracy of HIRC invoices
  • Procures required clinical facilities by coordinating with clinical supervisors to block clinical schedules
  • Coordinate with ordering physicians/departments (e.g., ED, ortho, Cancer Center, etc) to recruit, screen, enroll and retain clinical research subjects.
  • Provide instruction to research subjects on the imaging procedures as needed.
  • Establishes and uses appropriate data collection systems and procedures such as SmartSheets and REDCap
  • Ensures that data is de-identified or anonymized in accordance with research protocol
  • Establishes data transfer protocols from imaging modalities and ensures that data is transferred in accordance with research protocol (DICOM and raw imaging data)
  • Coordinates and monitors data collection, transfer, and removal from all imaging modalities.
  • Oversees the planning of imaging and scheduling and registration of patients on clinical/radiology scanners.
  • Develops efficient and safe clinical workflows and ensures that day-to-day clinical research is conducted in accordance with the research protocol
  • Develops and/or coordinates the maintenance of records on imaging procedures conducted and data transfer
  • Ensures confidentiality of subject records and coordinates with the CTSC Data Warehouse Honest Broker to anonymize or de-identify imaging data
  • In accordance with research protocol, ensures that clinical scanners maintain credentialing and established QC metrics.
  • Communicates errors, study deviations, or equipment failures to research coordinators or investigators
  • Maintains source documentation and oversees the preparation of study activity reports as it pertains to imaging.
  • Provides consultation, liaison, and administrative coordination between the imaging facility and investigators, research subjects, research coordinators, sponsors, credentialing bodies, ancillary departments such as the Cancer Center (PRMC), Cerner group, Informatics, Scheduling, etc.
  • Identifies and addresses problems associated with clinical imaging research and facilitates root cause analyses and corrections for deficiencies.

Conditions of Employment
  • May be required to submit to annual TB and rubella screening.
  • UNM will provide Hepatitis vaccination; candidate may decline vaccination through declination form or may provide record of vaccination from previous employer.
  • Current American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) in Computed Tomography and/or Magnetic Resonance Imaging Licensure preferred.
  • Current New Mexico Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy Program Licensure preferred.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
  • Must maintain certification status.


Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree; at least 3 years of directly related experience which may include directly related certification or practicum training. Certification from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.



Preferred Qualifications
Preferred Qualifications

* Certification in CT, MRI, radiography (ARRT) or nuclear medicine (NMTCB)

* Experience with clinical trials that included clinical imaging components

* Experience developing imaging research protocols

* Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications

* Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.

* Ability to develop and deliver presentations.

* Knowledge of the principles and procedures of clinical research

* Ability to design and implement systems necessary to collect, maintain, and analyze data

* Ability to make administrative and procedural decisions and judgments on sensitive, confidential issues

* Ability to prepare and acquire clinical images using established protocols
