Job Purpose
This engineer will help lead implementation of a comprehensive Transmission Integrity Management Program (TIMP) for over 1200 miles of natural gas transmission pipelines. The Lead Gas Asset Engineer will coordinate and take ownership of many aspects of Integrity Management implementation, including planning, coordinating and overseeing integrity assessments ( ECDA, ILI etc), evaluating assessment data, coordinating integrity digs, performing predicted failure pressure analysis, repair and mitigation of pipeline defects, and post-assessment reporting. Lead engineers are expected to perform with a high degree of independence and provide coaching and knowledge transfer to other members of the team. This is a hybrid position with in-person, remote, and field work locations as needed.
Key Accountabilities
- Plan, coordinate, and support integrity assessment of gas transmission pipelines by External Corrosion Direct Assessment (ECDA), Internal Corrosion Direct Assessment (ICDA) & Inline Inspection (ILI) In accordance with 49 CFR 192 Subpart O.
- Review integrity assessment data and develop integrity dig response plans.
- Plan, coordinate, and support all aspects of integrity dig execution, including onsite field assessment and supervision as needed.
- Perform in-situ inspection of pipeline flaws and provide engineering support for NDE technicians
- Analyze integrity related system issues to determine predicted failure pressure and critical strain in accordance with 49 CFR 192.712.
- Prepare integrity management reports, respond to internal and external data requests, and support data integration efforts within Gas Transmission Engineering.
- Track and report on key performance indicators (KPI) related to critical asset classes, prepare regulatory reporting on pipeline assets and assist/lead necessary documentation preparation for Rate Case, Internal and External audits and IRs.
- Review third-party construction plans within the company ROW and communicate damage prevention requirements.
- Collaborate with Corrosion technicians and engineers to provide technical support for cathodic protection system evaluation and remediation.
- Identification of pipeline risk and development of mitigation strategies based on risk management and risk modeling utilizing PHA, LOPA, QRA and other risk analysis tools and models.
- Propose and lead updates to company procedures and process improvement efforts where necessary.
- Provide technical guidance, support and coaching to others to share knowledge and develop technical understanding within the team.
- Able to travel overnight outside of normal work area and work overtime including nights/weekends/holidays for emergencies or other planned projects.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree from an ABET accredited engineering school is required. Position aligns closest to Mechanical, Civil, Chemical, or Material Science disciplines
- 6+ years of strong gas infrastructure-related engineering experience preferred
- 4+ years of gas transmission engineering experience preferred
- NYS PE license preferred
- Knowledge of relevant industry regulations, codes, and recommended practices, including 49 CFR 192, 16 NYCRR 255, ASME B31.8, ASME B31.8S, ASME B31G, API 1163, NACE SP0102, API 1176, API 1183, and API 579 is preferred.
- Knowledge with pipeline integrity principles and assessment methods: External Corrosion Direct Assessment (ECDA), Internal Corrosion Direct Assessment (ICDA) & Inline Inspection (ILI) is preferred.
- AWS certification preferred
- Knowledge of cathodic protection experience or NACE certification preferred
- Knowledge of Risk Management, Risk Assessment, and Risk Mitigation preferred
- Knowledge of mapping systems experience preferred, especially with GIS (ESRI, ArcGIS)
- Valid driver's license required with a safe driving history that meets National Grid'sSafe Driver policy.
Salary $139,000 - $164,000 a year This position has a career path which provides for advancement opportunities within and across bands as you develop and evolve in the position; gaining experience, expertise and acquiring and applying technical skills. Internal candidates will be assessed and provided offers against the minimum qualifications of this role and their individual experience.
