A Brief Overview
The Instructional Designer role is a core part of CHOP's highly innovative and collaborative Data Literacy Program, which operates within the Data Trust & Enablement team in the Data and Analytics organization. With the digitization of healthcare and the need to use data to improve processes and patient outcomes, the Data Literacy program's mission is to help every employee speak the language of data with confidence. This program is responsible for data-related training and learning such as curated training programs, workshops, analytics communities of practice and cohort-based learning experiences.

The primary audience for these data literacy initiatives are healthcare providers and support staff in a rapidly changing, fast-paced healthcare setting. This role will be key in developing, designing, and implementing high-quality learning experiences that support the growth of data literacy across professionals at CHOP as well as the Philadelphia community as the program bridges gaps in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) for the next generation of future data leaders.

This role requires the ability to learn and adapt quickly, collaborate with peers and data subject matter experts (SMEs), as well as work with a variety of stakeholders with different data literacy needs and requirements, and demonstrate an understanding of data and analytics. The ideal candidate will have a solid understanding of basic concepts of math and/or data and analytics experience, including the ability to design learning experiences that incorporate foundational data literacy principles. As part of the Data Literacy Program, the Instructional Designer will work closely with CHOP data SMEs, stakeholders, and Data Literacy team members to create engaging, accessible and effective training programs that empower individuals to build the skills needed to work confidently with data.

What you will do

  • Content Creation: Collaborate with SMEs to translate complex data concepts into clear, understandable and engaging learning content that aligns with the goals of the Data Literacy Program. This includes utilizing instructional design methodology to develop Interactive Courseware (ICW) and the following:
    * Develops needs analysis, performance objectives, testing material, design documents, and courseware scripts for Data Literacy applications.
    * Designs and documents effective sequences and learning strategies for courseware development.
    * Designs engaging training materials tailored for various delivery formats, including instructor-led sessions, self-paced modules, workshops, job aids, and blended learning approaches.
    * Produces high quality work and coordinates multiple projects, meeting all project deadlines.
    * Conducts pilot tests of the courseware and makes revisions based upon data from pilot tests and other formative evaluations.
    * Identifies weaknesses in existing courses and implements improvement strategies.
    * Ensures outlines, scripts, and final courseware meet ICW standards and are SCORM compliant.
  • Learning Experience Design: Apply instructional design best practices with age-appropriate learning principles and data-driven insights to create learner-centered, interactive and impactful learning experiences. This includes:
    * Remaining current with latest technology, development tools and trends in online education
    * Adopt new technologies to deploy state-of-the-art content types.
    * Identify potential instructional vendors for continuous improvement of course content.
    * Develop assessments to evaluate the effectiveness of training programs and identify areas for continuous improvement.
  • Learning Content Administration: Develop and communicate industry-leading instructional design concepts while maintaining and updating Data Literacy courseware in collaboration with Instructional Designers to ensure relevance and quality. The instructional designer will:
    * Provide quality assurance of all learning deliverables.
    * Develop and communicate industry-leading instructional design concepts.
    * Maintain and refine Data Literacy courseware and make updates as needed in partnership with Data Literacy Instructional Designers.

Location

  • The department works approximately 80% remotely, 20% on site in our Philadelphia office on an as-needed basis.

Education Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree Required
  • Master's Degree Instructional Technology or Design Preferred

Experience Qualifications

  • At least two (2) years Experience in training and supervision, classroom instruction and instructional design Required and
  • At least two (2) years Experience in visual and instructional design tools such as Adobe Creative Suite, Camtasia, Vyond, Captivate, Articulate, Storyline, etc. Required and
  • At least two (2) years Experience in eLearning development, Learning Theory and instructional strategies Required and
  • At least one (1) year Experience in Design of interactive courseware products (Web or CBT) Required

Skills and Abilities

  • A solid understanding of basic concepts of math and/or data and analytics, including the ability to design learning experiences that incorporate data literacy principles. (Preferred proficiency)
  • Understanding of instructional design methodologies, E-Learning Strategies, learning management systems (LMS), computer-based training development skills. (Required proficiency)
  • Understanding and experience applying adult learning principles/ADDIE model (Required proficiency)
  • Proficiency with Adobe Creative Cloud applications (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) (Required proficiency)
  • Competency in photo retouching/manipulation (Required proficiency)
  • Experience with eLearning software (Articulate Storyline, Adobe Captivate) (Required proficiency)
  • Experience with Adobe After Effects or other motion graphic software (Required proficiency)

Licenses and Certifications

  • Instructional Design Certification - Villanova University - within 6 months - Preferred or
  • Instructional Design Certification - Association for Talent & Development - within 6 months - Preferred or
  • User Design (UX) Certification - Google - within 6 months - Preferred
