JOB SUMMARY
Works under broad direction to plan, organize, direct, and participate in work of major research project in field of specialization for which incumbent is particularly qualified by virtue of extensive training and experience.

The laboratory of Dr. Sarah Huen is seeking an enthusiastic and highly motivated individual with significant experience in molecular and cellular biology and mouse models of disease. The Huen lab studies metabolic pathways that promote survival and tissue protection during inflammation and tissue injury. Research techniques include in vivo mouse studies, molecular biology, and mitochondrial metabolism studies. The research scientist will be responsible for performing scientific research (mouse models, cell culture, and molecular biology) including planning, coordinating and executing assigned research projects as well as managing the laboratory and overseeing laboratory maintenance. Experience with kidney research, metabolism and/or in vivo rodent models of disease, mouse/rat surgery preferable.

Specific lab duties include:



  • Participating in an ongoing research projects in the laboratory through performing routine scientific research in molecular biology, physiology, metabolism, and other related fields.
  • Performs advanced scientific research work, suggesting modifications to, or improvements in, design of research projects, presenting original ideas for follow-up studies, and recommending utilization of new or revised techniques and procedures to obtain desired results.
  • Plans, coordinates, and supervises assigned research projects, exercising responsibility for project performance and accountability for progress.
  • Assembles and analyzes research data.
  • Assists in preparation of research material for reports, grants, or publication.
  • May supervise Research Technicians and/or Research Assistants of lower grade, making work assignments, advising on work procedures and reviewing work in process and upon completion.
  • General lab maintenance and constructs, assembles, and operates experimental or other special designed laboratory apparatus and equipment

    2 years At level of Research Scientist or its equivalent with Master's Degree or


JOB DUTIES



  • Plans, organizes, coordinates, directs, and personally participates in major medical or scientific research project, including development and implementation of research protocols. Selects key research personnel; determines specific goals or objectives to be attained; assigns and reviews work of subordinates.
  • Reviews and analyzes resulting research data; revises techniques or approaches to work problems as indicated necessary by research data. Compiles, writes, and submits project results to principal investigator or department chairman.
  • Prepares or assists in preparation of research papers, reports, and abstracts for publication as one of co-authors.
  • Designs, develops, or adapts equipment used in experiments or research to obtain desired results.
  • Plans and supervises training of technicians and other laboratory personnel with respect to proper laboratory techniques, use of laboratory equipment, and safety procedures.
  • Confers with industrial, governmental, or other groups concerning progress or results of research project.
  • Supervises large group of employees engaged in performance of technical and professional work, which varies from routine to complex laboratory work tasks.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
