Advanced Manufacturing Technician Specialist
Purpose:
Steel America, a division of Colonna's Shipyard, is looking for an Advanced Manufacturing Technician Specialist to support operations in the Inside Machine Shop. The Advanced Manufacturing Technician Specialist will help ensure smooth execution of manufacturing processes by providing key technical support, including the maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair, of manufacturing equipment, fixtures, and components.
The position is located onsite in Norfolk, VA and will often require hours beyond a standard work week, to include evenings and weekends as needed. Position may require limited travel.
Job Description:
Key responsibilities include:
- Provide technical support (including maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair) for manufacturing machinery to resolve operational problems and minimize downtime.
- Design, fabricate, and machine specialized fixtures and tools to resolve operational machining issues.
- Assist in the setup, operation, and maintenance of advanced machining equipment to ensure efficient part production.
- Support manufacturing and refurbishment of components for marine propulsion systems.
- Build machining fixtures to enhance production efficiency and precision.
- Utilize mechanical assembly skills to assemble and disassemble components as needed for repairs and maintenance.
- Maintain accurate records of production activities, including machine settings, maintenance logs, and quality control documentation.
- Conduct routine maintenance on machinery and tools to ensure optimal performance and safety.
- Adhere to safety protocols and promote a safe working environment for all team members.
Additionally, this position will:
- Provide training and mentorship to junior staff and apprentices on best practices, equipment operation, and safety protocols.
- Collaborate with project managers and production teams to address special manufacturing operations and implement effective solutions.
- Monitor and inspect production processes to ensure adherence to quality standards and specifications, employing statistical process control techniques as necessary.
Qualifications:
- Must have High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Must have at least ten (10) years of experience in a manufacturing environment, preferably in machining or shipbuilding.
- Must have a strong understanding of machining processes, equipment, and troubleshooting techniques for both machinery and machining issues.
- Must have a mechanical assembly background with experience in assembling and disassembling components.
- Must be able to read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and specifications accurately.
- Must have excellent communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with project managers and other departments.
- Must have strong attention to detail and a commitment to producing high-quality work.
- Must have knowledge of safety regulations and practices in a manufacturing environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Technical degree or certification in machining, manufacturing, mechanical assembly, or related field preferred.
- Familiarity with manufacturing processes related to marine propulsion systems is highly preferred.
Travel Requirements:
- Minimal Travel; 10% or less.
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to lift, carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes. The exact weight requirements will be determined by the specific job, but no less than 20 lbs.
- Able to work on and climb ladders, work in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions and in confined spaces, including enter and moving through manholes.
- Able to perform other duties as required which may involve high heat, humidity, noise and dirty conditions.
- Frequent exposure to noise due to machinery and equipment.
- Employee is required to operate trucks, forklifts & man-lifts.
- While performing the duties of this job, you may frequently be required to stand, walk & sit; use hands or fingers; handle or feel; talk and hear. Occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, climb and balance, stoop, squat, kneel, twist and crawl.
- Work in extreme temperatures and conditions. At times you will work in areas that have less adequate ventilation
- Frequent use of respirator.
