GENERAL SUMMARY: Responsible for general support functions within the clinical laboratory. Functions performed include but are not limited to the sorting and distribution of laboratory blood and body fluid specimens to departments for analysis, data entry of laboratory orders and patient information, monitoring and tracking supply, reagent verification and ability to perform moderate complex test analysis. PRINCIPAL JOB FUNCTIONS: 1. *Commits to the mission, vision, beliefs and consistently demonstrates our core values. 2. *Maintains competency and proficiency with respect to all job related laboratory policies and procedures. 3. *Completes assigned tasks accurately and timely, adhering to all laboratory standards, policies and procedures. 4. *Receives and processes specimens into the laboratory, including centrifugation, aliquoting, and distribution of specimens to the appropriate department or reference laboratories for analysis. 5. *Ensures specimens are labeled and stored properly. 6. *Assists with data entry, including but not limited to entering requisition orders. 7. *Tracks and manages the receiving expected list and sendout/sentout list. 8. *Assists with inventory management and reagent verification tracking. 9. *Demonstrates competecy in waived patient testing such as POCT and serologic/kit testing and stays competent in this testing through semi or annual competencies. 10. *Performs moderately complex testing-such as blood gas analysis, moderate complex serologic/kit testing, placing samples on analyzers and minimal troubleshooting of instrumentation. 11. *Ability to perform higher troubleshooting skills when sample handling./triaging specimens, follow up on sample adequacy or misinformation on orders. 12. Answers telephone calls and responds to non-technical questions from hospital staff and/or patients. 13. Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise. 14. Participates in meetings, committees and department projects as assigned. 15. Performs other related projects and duties as assigned. (Essential Job functions are marked with an asterisk "*". Attach Addendum for positions with slightly different roles or work-specific differences as needed. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: 1. Demonstrates competency in POCT and waived serologic/kit testing. 2. Knowledge of computer hardware equipment and software applications relevant to work functions. 3. Skill in attention to detail. 4. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. 5. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of personnel, medical staff, volunteer and ancillary departments including diverse patient populations. 6. Ability to problem solve and engage independent critical thinking skills. 7. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. 8. Ability to provide solutions to problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. 9. Ability to maintain confidentiality relevant to sensitive information and comply with all HIPAA compliance procedures/policies. 10. Ability to work independently and as a team member. 11. Ability to prioritize work demands and work with minimal supervision. 12. Ability to handle biological materials utilizing required PPE. 13. Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Specimen Processing Technician 1 experience. Associates, Bachelor's or higher degree in a chemical, physical or biological science required.. Prior experience in a laboratory environment preferred. Would meet eligibility for the MLT or MLS career ladder progression within the laboratory according to American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) standards. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: (Physical Requirements are based on federal criteria and assigned by Human Resources upon review of the Principal Job Functions.) (DOT) - Characterized as medium work requiring exertion of 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or a greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Must be able to distinguish and discriminate between colors. |
