Position Title: Scientist

Location: Munising, MI

Description:

Mativ is actively pursuinga Scientist with a strong technical background to join our Research and Development Team in Munising, Michigan. The role will be responsible for new product development, focusing on technology platform development, materials evaluation, coating formulation development, laboratory experiments, and production trials. This role supports Mativ's Indafor branded technical specialty paper and film products, with the potential to support our other brand areas as needed. This is an individual contributor role with the potential to grow on a continued technical pathway or into a people leadership position.

responsibilities:

  • With a focus on coating formulations and saturants, conduct materials exploration, laboratory evaluations, and production trials to support new technology platform and product development projects
  • Develop an in-depth understanding of our laboratory equipment, pilot coater, testing procedures, and results reporting
  • Develop an in-depth understanding of our materials, product designs/ requirements and manufacturing equipment/ processes.
  • Ensure R&D activities comply with corporate, state, and federal laws and regulations, including employee and product safety requirements
  • Develop and execute trial plans, collaborating with cross-functional team members
  • Create and control intellectual property
  • Serve as a subject matter expert in materials, formulations, and product design within the department, cross functional teams, and Mativ.
  • Execute projects within the framework of the established Stage-Gate process
  • Generate technical reports with relevant data, conclusions, and recommendations to internal and external audiences
  • Travel up to 20 %, includes customer, supplier, and internal travel

qualifications:

Required

  • A bachelor's degree in materials science, chemistry, chemical engineering, polymer science, paper science, or related technical field of study
  • Up to 5 years of experience in coatings or coated paper industries
  • Microsoft Office skills, particularly in Excel and Word
  • Strong scientific, statistical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
  • Capability to manage multiple tasks or projects at once within the department and cross-functional teams
  • A demonstrated ability to effectively communicate internally and also with customers and suppliers

Preferred

  • Lean Six Sigma Green or Black Belt
  • Minitab competencies
  • Saturation formulation and application experience
