Job Summary

#CA-SS

Under direct supervision of designated faculty and general supervision of the Chief Administrative Officer, Director of the Orthopaedic Laboratory and the Director of the Vice Chair of Research, this position will serve as the lab manager in support of the broader research mission in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. Assignments include, managing day-to-day tasks essential for research operations, and provide support for faculty, residents, fellows and students in their projects related to small animal models, biomechanics, imaging, histology, and cell/molecular biology. Specic contributions will likely include oversight of lab equipment, maintaining chemical inventory in campus databases, interfacing with campus safety on laboratory inspections, overseeing the order and delivery of communal supplies and resources, hands-on instruction and collaboration with faculty, residents and students, and ensuring compliance with lab protocols and safety standards, policies and procedures. This position will also manage space and facilitate onboarding for new faculty, staff, postdocs and students.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • Master's degree in Biomedical Engineering/Bioengineering, Mechanical Engineering, Molecular and Cellular Biology, or related fields or combination of education and experience.
  • Proven lab management experience, ideally in a research or academic setting
  • Experience with research involving animal studies, and capable of animal handling, including, but not limited to animal surgery and anesthesia.
  • Demonstrated experience of BUA and IACUC applications and protocols and related report writing.
  • Experience with data analysis and statistics.
  • Experience using computer-based word processing, spreadsheets, graphics and presentation software.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a larger team.
  • Ability to maintain accurate and comprehensive records, ensuring all relevant information is captured, organized and easily accessible.
  • Demonstrated ability to resolve compliance problems & issues involving research safety, animal subjects and human subjects.

Department Overview

This position is with the UC Davis Health School of Medicine Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, an academic/clinical department, encompassing several sub-specialties, working to achieve excellence in patient care, teaching, research and public service. Molecular and biomechanical research is the major focus of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery's research laboratories.

Established when the department was founded in 1969, the Orthopaedic Research Laboratories became the Lawrence J. Ellison Musculoskeletal Research Center in 1997, made possible through a generous gift by Lawrence J. Ellison, president and chief executive officer of Oracle Corporation, to help develop a world-class research center in skeletal molecular biology.

The laboratories provide a facility where faculty, residents, fellows, medical students, graduate and undergraduate students and visiting scholars can conduct broadly interdisciplinary research in tissue and cellular biomechanics, regeneration and repair.
