This position has a progression.

PURPOSE STATEMENT:

Performs as a skilled technician following specific policies/procedures/methods in responding to written/verbal instructions regarding the installation, testing, repair and adjusting of all types/models of gas utilization appliances/equipment and systems for residential and commercial users. Performs as Installer 1/C, Tank Truck Driver, Cylinder Driver or Meter Reader as required



Responsibilities

    Inspects and tests appliances, equipment, and associated systems on customers' premises to activate service or determine cause of complaint. Ensures correct metering (delivery) pressure is documented on service order. Checks high pressure service for dust, water or plug. When major repairs or parts are necessary, discusses with customer the repairs and costs as set forth in the stock parts price manual and special-order parts, using current labor rates; initiates service orders. Uses human senses, leak detecting solution, and gas detection or measurement equipment such as leak detector, manometer, pressure gauge to detect problem. If a problem is detected and cannot be repaired immediately, issues an unsatisfactory condition report and explains to the customer what needs to be done. Refers more difficult tasks or work orders to or collaborates the repair with the Customer Service Foreman.
  1. Fixes the problem: Cleans, adjusts, repairs, changes or replaces burners, pilot lights, controls, baffle, appliance valves, appliance regulators, defective or old age meters, or any other part, mechanism or electronic device pertaining to the operation of appliances, equipment and systems. Uses leak detecting solution and gas detection or measurement equipment such as leak detector, manometer, pressure gauge to verify that the problem has been corrected.
  2. Locks, unlocks, reads, changes and removes meters; initiates plugged service. Investigates high bill complaints and completes service orders as to work performed. Collects money on C.O.D. orders and plug meter orders; properly accounts for revenues collected and delivers money to Dispatcher or Cashier.
  3. Functions as a first responder in gas related situations such as fires, leaks, broken pipes and explosions. Performs necessary emergency repairs and applies stopper or other approved method when necessary to secure leak. Sets-up hot zones, directs all personnel at the emergency site and stands-by at the site when necessary until properly relieved by appropriate personnel. Communicates all findings to dispatcher.
  4. Provides and extends at all times a courteous and tactful demeanor when dealing with all customers or the public. Advises or instructs consumer in the proper and efficient operation of their appliances/equipment.
  5. Drives Company vehicle and maintains necessary supplies and equipment needed to perform duties.
  6. Performs clerical/administrative duties such as preparing reports, inputting data into the computer, etc.
  7. Works in a safe and responsible manner. Complies with and where required enforces all safety rules, regulations and practices in effect and established/adopted by the Company. Cooperates in the fullest in the promotion of safety, safe work habits and good housekeeping to include the reporting and rectifying, as qualified, any unsafe conditions or act. Maintains all EH&S training on a current basis.
  8. Performs as Installer 1/C, Tank Truck Driver, Cylinder Driver or Meter Reader when required.
  9. Performs related and other work as required and/or directed.

OTHER FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Performs all other related duties as instructed by supervisor/manager.


Qualifications

Required Education and/or Work Experience:

  • Completed all required Department of Transportation (DOT) Federal/State, OSHA Federal/State and NFPA courses or programs.
  • Must maintain at least minimum passing scores per regulations, for all recurring Federal/State and NFPA courses or programs.
  • Must possess a valid Class B, CDL license with Hazardous Material endorsement, with no restrictions on air brakes or transmission type, and valid Medical Examiner's Certificate per 49 CFR 391.41 through 391.49 and appropriate clearance certificate such as TWIC.
  • Satisfactory completion of in-house Service Technician Training and Field Evaluation; must pass continuing refresher courses
  • At least four years successful and progressive experience of which two years must have been as a Service Technician III; these experience requirements may be reduced at management's sole discretion based on need and for the individual who demonstrates exceptional ability and skills to perform the duties of Service Technician II.
  • Must have demonstrated the knowledge and ability to effectively install, repair, test and adjust gas appliances equipment and systems and have a work record of dealing tactfully and courteously with customers.
  • Possesses a very good working knowledge of departmental operating rules and procedures, pertinent codes (such as NFPA #58 and #59) regulations, standards and safety rules/regulations/practices in addition to standard practices and procedures for this trade.
  • Qualified in all phases of the work described.
  • Very proficient in the proper use of the tools, materials, and equipment of the trade and have a good safety record.
  • Must be a safe and competent driver, cognizant of all traffic laws and have a clean traffic abstract.
  • Ability to use computer.

Preferred Education and/or Work Experience:

  • Preferably a high school graduate with technical schooling.

Required Licensure, Certification, Registration or Designation:
