About our group:

Working in tandem with world class silicon suppliers, the Power Device team develops custom mixed signal integrated circuits that are fundamental to HDD operation and incorporate an array of embedded functions including motor drive, voltage regulation, energy harvesting and data conversion. The Power Device team is a small group that resides within the larger Hardware Engineering organization, which has responsibility for many aspects of HDD design. As such, ample opportunity exists for cross pollination and skill development via collaboration with subject matter experts across multiple functional disciplines

About the role - you will:

  • Work on a variety of projects including silicon development and design / verification of power distribution systems for HDD products.
  • Be involved with silicon development activities centering on the specification, design and validation of integrated power electronics including three-phase motor drivers, data converters and voltage regulators.
  • While detailed transistor level design is performed by Seagate's silicon partners, extensive behavioral level modeling and design is conducted in house beforehand to help guide vendor efforts. In this capacity, examples include:

    • Defining gain bandwidth product requirements for opamp circuits
    • Determining allowable limits for OTA gain and saturation current
    • Identifying appropriate switching regulator parameters (RDS,ON, switching frequency, etc.)

  • Shift focus to component level testing when silicon becomes available, with the bulk of specified device parameters validated in the lab.
  • Work closely with other functional teams to integrate silicon into Seagate end products.
  • Be involved with voltage budgeting, which is a detail-oriented process whereby an entire power distribution system consisting of voltage regulators, printed circuit board and receiving electronics is simulated to ensure critical voltage constraints will be satisfied in volume production.

    • Collaborate with stakeholders to identify requirements and generate system level models.
    • Be involved with Initial simulations that are performed to highlight issues and potential areas for improvement, with models and assumptions iteratively adjusted until all requirements are satisfied.

About you:

  • The ideal candidate for this position is self-motivated and will exercise wide discretion in determining the best methods and procedures for accomplishing assigned objectives, all while operating with minimal direction and oversight.
  • A demonstrated ability to work effectively with cross functional teams and network with key contacts outside your own area of expertise is mandatory.
  • Through the course of launching new silicon to production, you will interface with individuals of diverse backgrounds and experience levels, and the ability to adopt situational teaching and learning roles is crucial

Your experience includes:

  • Electronics development with mixed signal background and familiarity in following areas

    • Voltage regulators
    • Opamp circuits
    • Transconductance loops
    • D/A and A/D converters

  • Spice circuit modeling

    • Using behavioral Spice constructs to create abstracted sub-circuits.
    • Constructing system level models to predict performance.

  • Bench level electronics validation with hands on knowledge of common test equipment (power supply, oscilloscope, function generator, network analyzer, etc.)
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare comprehensive documentation and presentations using Microsoft tool suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Visio)
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or related field (i.e. Mechanical, Chemical, Computer Engineering, Materials, Physics, or Information Technology) and 8+ years of experience or Master's degree in the same and 6+ years' experience or PhD and 3+ years of experience or equivalent experience and education.

You might also have:

  • Deeper knowledge of electronics development including

    • System level offset & noise analysis
    • Measurement of common mode rejection and power supply rejection
    • Circuit stability modeling and verification
    • Motor drive principles

  • Voltage regulator modeling to determine stability and predict transient response.
  • Additional bench level experience

    • Validating opamp circuit parameters
    • Quantifying voltage regulator performance including efficiency and line / load regulation.
    • Noise measurements

  • Filter analysis & design
  • Control systems
  • PCB design
  • Low voltage power distribution systems
