Occidental is looking for an experienced and motivated individual to fill the position of Automation Field Engineer in the Low Carbon Ventures Commercial Development department in Midland, TX. The role will be working at the Stratos Direct Air Capture facility in Notrees, TX. The Automation Field Engineer will be responsible for the support of operations in the design, development and execution of automation activities in Low Carbon Ventures projects at the Stratos DAC facility.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide day-to-day automation support for the Direct Air Capture Plant (Stratos), a first of its kind new facility.
  • Programming of Redundant Architecture PLC's, and Human Machine Interfaces (HMIs - PlantPAx Operator Workstations/PanelView/Maple) within guidelines of OXY automation standards
  • For small facility modification efforts, generate all automation engineering project documentation, adhere to change control processes (MOC) and deliver projects on time which are implemented as designed.
  • Understand business priorities, challenges and provide solutions to their problems in the automation area.
  • Enforce change control processes (MOCs) and monitor compliance via regular auditing activities.
  • Mentoring facility technical staff in identifying and resolving Process Control, Control Network, and Instrumentation problems and participating in fix and repair issues related to the Automation System to support O&M needs.
  • Diagnose and work to eliminate possible root cause failures from the automation controller level down to the device, or into the process to help support operations.
  • Develop and maintain strong customer relationships with onsite plant manager and operations team.
  • Assist in evaluation of new facilities production/automation technologies.
  • Work with IT and Central Automation Group to provide comprehensive support.
  • Maintain project schedule, implementation, compliance to design and commissioning.
  • Ability to work independently, multi-task, follow processes and policies, including environmental & safety, and act as a contributing member of a team environment.
  • Must be able to plan and prioritize daily tasks with excellent organizational skills including accurate records keeping and proper documentation.
  • Valid driver's license with no restrictions that would prohibit driving a company vehicle.
  • Must be willing to travel, respond to callouts on nights & weekends as needed.
  • Willingness to work a rotational schedule.

Education:

Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related degree or an Associate's degree with relevant work experience

Experience:

Minimum 10 years of work experience in automation and controls

Professional/Technical Knowledge:

Experience in process control and instrumentation supporting gas plants, oilfields or similar heavy industrial operations.

Strong knowledge of RTUs and PLCs (Allen-Bradley). Understanding of digital and analog I/O, programming, and troubleshooting.

Familiar with Control I/O Network protocols and topologies such as DLR, PRP, Ethernet IP.

Strong knowledge of automation and electrical design principles and industry standards.

Understanding of Pre-Start Safety Review process (PSSR)s and Management of Change (MOCs).

Adequate knowledge of relational database systems, Object Oriented Programming.

Be knowledgeable with tagging conventions, programing simulation and testing.

Have a thorough understanding of field instrumentation concepts, communication protocols (Modbus, HART, DNP3 and wireless devices) and electrical equipment monitoring to facilitate troubleshooting efforts.
