JOB SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Executive Director, the Director of Spiritual Life Services is responsible for developing a program that provides spiritual support and guidance to the residents. This ministry is grounded in the values of compassion, inclusiveness and empowerment for growth and extends a ministry of pastoral care and spiritual formation to all residents regardless of religious affiliation and belief (or non-belief).

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Include the following. Other duties may be assigned as necessary.

* Provides quality Customer Service efficiently to residents, families, co-workers and vendors in a manner to ensure satisfaction.

* Coordinates speakers and musicians for the existing worship service in Independent Living. Coordinates other worship services in other areas as deemed necessary by the Executive Director and residents. Plans and leads worship "as needed" and deemed appropriate.

* Makes regular visits to residents in skilled nursing and develops a spiritual care visitation program for that area that utilizes the community's residents and outside volunteers. Visits Independent Living/Assisted Living residents in their homes for spiritual counsel by request. Visits hospitalized residents.

* Provides a ministry of supportive presence to residents and staff experiencing crisis.

* Assists family members (or other responsible parties) and staff in planning and leading memorial services as requested.

* Develops a way to perform a spiritual needs assessment of new residents and in process shares with residents the spiritual care resources available to them at the community and in the immediate area.

* Keeps records of assessments and pastoral care interventions; tracks 1-1visits (by self and volunteers) in skilled care for activities charting; participates in care-plan meetings as appropriate; receives and disseminates needs and information around pastoral care with other staff members as appropriate. Is available for consultation on ethical issues in decisions facing staff and residents.

* Creates programs around spirituality and spiritual growth (in consultation with other programming staff) for residents. Leads discussion groups and/or support groups. Coordinates Bible studies or other spiritual/religious activities led by residents or outside volunteers.

* Provides ways of observing religious holidays for non-dominant religious groups present in residents and staff.

* Serves as a liaison to clergy in surrounding area for the purpose of encouraging visits with and support of residents, and encouraging participation in providing worship experiences at the community.

* Performs other duties as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS and QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. * Holds a degree from an accredited undergraduate college or university as well as a degree from a school of theology (M.Div. preferred); at least one unit of Clinical Pastoral Education; holds denominational endorsement for ministry and is in good standing with denomination; certification by national chaplaincy organization or association preferred; pastoral experience with older adults preferred.

* Must be comfortable with religious diversity and able to provide spiritual and pastoral care to residents of all beliefs (or non-belief). Must be able to articulate and live out a ministry of presence and understand that this is not an appropriate venue for pushing one particular religious viewpoint or faith tradition.

* Ability to read, analyze, interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures or governmental regulations; ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals; able to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers and the general public.

* Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference and volume; able to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

* Able to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists; able to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
