Certified Nurse Practitioner/ Physician Assistant-Certified - SMS-3481

This is an administrative professional position in the teaching and clinical practice of Pediatric
Hospital Medicine to medical students, residents, and allied health professionals. The major
function of the Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) includes: education,
consultation, and clinical practice. The primary responsibility of the NP/PA is the direct
application of clinical expertise to patients and families being managed in the General Inpatient
Unit and Intermediate Care Unit in the hospital. Comprehensive, family-centered health care is
delivered with clinical responsibilities as outlined in the Collaboration Agreement by the
collaborating physicians.

Service
1. Demonstrates, by actions, commitment to the mission and the behavioral standards
of SIU School of Medicine. Provides excellent service to both internal and external
customers through collaboration and partnership; compassion and respect; integrity
and accountability; diversity and inclusion; as well as continuous learning and
improvement.
2. Provide patient care and consultations as outlined in the Collaboration Agreement
with Pediatric Hospital Medicine faculty.
3. Set an example to future practitioners of highly-skilled and conscientious practice of
General Pediatrics that is balanced with self-education and other academic
activities.
4. Maintain a clinical practice in General Pediatrics in order to enhance clinical
proficiency.
5. Demonstrate excellence in clinical practice through period review by medical doctor
faculty.
6. Maintain documentation of competency on ongoing cases.
7. Adhere to SIU Healthcare Standards of Service, compliance, patient satisfaction,
and provider communication.
8. Adhere to norms established by the Division of Pediatric Hospital Medicine.

Teaching
1. Participate by providing didactic and clinical teaching for residents, medical students and
colleagues as requested.
2. Provide continuing education programs in general pediatrics for both the clinical
faculty and for practicing physicians in the area.
3. Carry out and promote the mission of the Department of Pediatrics by being a role
model for Inpatient staff, students and residents as a teacher and practitioner of
General Pediatrics.

Administration
1. Assist the Division Director in promoting and developing a comprehensive Pediatric
Hospitalist program.
2. Serve on various School of Medicine committees and/or community activities as
assigned by the Medical Director, Division Director, and Chairman of the Department
of Pediatrics or the Dean of the School of Medicine.
3. Participate in quality initiatives assigned by the Medical Director or Division
Director

Research
1. Participate in scholarly activities and promote development of academic or research
activities related to pediatrics to enhance the academic environment of the Division.
2. Support medical student and resident research activities.
1. Assist the Division Director in promoting and developing a comprehensive Pediatric

• Graduate of an accredited school of nursing or accredited Physician Assistant program upon start date.
• Proof of current licensure as an Advanced Practical Nurse upon start date, which includes:
  • Proof of current licensure as a registered professional nurse in Illinois.
  • Prior to July 1, 2001, proof of successful completion of a post-basic advanced practice formal education program in the area of nursing specialty; or proof of successful completion of a graduate degree appropriate for national certification as a CNS, CRNA, CNP, or CNM. OR
  • Proof of current licensure as a Physician Assistant in the State of Illinois
• For an NP, certification as a Nurse Practitioner by the National Certification Corporation, ACNN.
• Successfully complete and maintain current recognition in BLS, NRP and PALS.
• Have documentation of a minimum of 50 hours of CME or continuing education units in Pediatric topics within a two-year period.
• Sensitive to the needs of underrepresented minority populations.
