Information Technology and Computing Services (
ITCS) is the central agency that supports enterprise-wide computing at East Carolina University.
ITCS, through innovative information technology initiatives and service, provides opportunities for the
ECU community to excel in teaching, research, and service using state-of-the-market technology and collaborative environments.
ITCS is first and foremost committed to providing excellent information technology support for faculty, staff, and students.
ITCS partners with campus departments, other universities, and industry to make strategic investments in information technology infrastructure that will help maintain a competitive advantage in administrative applications, faculty research, and outreach to the state and nation. We will achieve this through increasing the core functions and deploying appropriate technology throughout the university.
Network Engineering and Support team is responsible for the installation, deployment, maintenance, and automation of various network services, including enterprise-level network systems or services that are part of, affect or influence the enterprise network infrastructure. This team assists in developing the overall network design and will engage them for consultation services on major network issues and design changes that significantly impact or influence network performance. Networking Services is composed of various primary support areas including: Network Architect, Network Engineering, Unified Communications, Network Infrastructure and Network Security and Analysis. |
Job Duties |
This position functions in a low to medium technical capacity and is responsible for managing, maintaining, designing, installing, and troubleshooting various enterprise-level network services for the entirety of East Carolina University's campuses. This position is also accountable for network automation, disaster recovery, project management, and professional development.

WAN technologies designs, configuration, and maintenance
* Wireless technologies designs, configuration, and maintenance
* Administration and oversight of network monitoring and reporting systems
* Troubleshooting wired and wireless network issues
* Technology research and development
* Disaster recovery, training, and documentation for network infrastructure and designs
* Manage, oversee, and participate in low to medium projects
* May coordinate and organize day-to-day operations of student workers
Network Monitoring, Management, Troubleshooting and Support:
This position is responsible for the monitoring, management, and troubleshooting of network resources. Understanding the underlying issues related to network and application connectivity problems and take action to prevent future occurrences. Diagnose and resolve network protocol problems involving a variety of network applications and operating systems. Communicate with team members, Supervisor, and appropriate resources for issues that impact enterprise services. Assist internal and external clients and others with resolving general network-associated problems as needed. Provide management with reports of system resource utilization. Preparing network and operations documentation for distribution/use within
ITCS, as well as end-users and departments.
Network Design, Installation and Maintenance:
Function in a low to medium technical resource capacity concentrating in the primary systems of responsibility which may include but is not limited to: various enterprise-level network services; switching, routing, wireless network services, network monitoring, management, and reporting systems, and enterprise-level network systems or services that affect or influence the enterprise network infrastructure. This position investigates and develops solutions to improve system and application performance. This position is responsible for installing, configuring, monitoring, and maintaining a variety of networking products and associated management systems, and providing technical support on many network-related issues. Duties also include installing supported levels/releases of vendor supplied software and supported products; minimizing application unavailability to the end-user while maximizing available resources; providing a platform that is conducive to future technical enhancements; providing technical documentation to staff regarding the use and procedures of the application; troubleshooting problems pertaining to systems; identifying conditions that impede optimum system performance; establishing security guidelines; setting access permissions; using all available resources to protect environment from potential security threats. Develop, propose, and implement solutions to increase system performance and effectiveness.
Documentation, Professional Development and Administration:
This position will utilize excellent oral and written communications skills. Communication delivery methods will include but not limited to web pages, documents, presentations and formal and informal training sessions. Document recurring activities so that when the position is not available, essential duties can be performed by another team member. Identifies needed knowledge, seeks out and applies that knowledge to changing client and campus needs. Assist Manager with administrative duties and miscellaneous functions including the routing of problems to the appropriate technical support level. Thoroughly documents assigned problem reports that have been resolved.
Disaster Recovery/Business Continuity (DR/BC):
This position is responsible for DR/BC planning, implementation, documentation, cross training of team members, and testing on a scheduled basis of systems in which they are responsible for maintaining. Establish goals and actions in the implementation of DR/BC processes.
Project Management:
Demonstrate ability to manage projects that have low to medium complexity, often involving low to moderate changes to the environment or implementing new technologies. Some projects may require detailed planning with other teams throughout the organization or supporting vendors for technical support and recommendations. Demonstrate the ability for maintaining accurate project documentation, project priorities, providing status updates and ensuring projects are completed according to schedule. May receive goals and objectives from supervisor and proactively research and identify methods to attain them. May function as a project team leader for projects of low to medium complexity, and at times a project team member for other complex projects of different functional teams. Assist management with developing project budgets. Utilization of project management software and methodologies is required to manage projects.
New Technology Exploration:
Plan for the effective and efficient use of available technologies, as well as, new technologies as they are developed. Assists in developing solutions that that will offer efficiencies and enhancements for an evolving enterprise network infrastructure.
Other duties as assigned.
Duties require On-Call responsibilities.
The standard work schedule for this position will need to be adjusted to meet the position requirements, which include and are not limited to evening and weekend hours to perform scheduled and unscheduled workload requirements to maintain University operations.
This position requires the employee to reside within a reasonable commutable distance of the
ECU main campus. "Reasonable commuting distance" is defined as a location that does not exceed a distance that can be safely traveled in two hours by automobile under average conditions of traffic, weather, and roads to employee's assigned duty station in Greenville, NC.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education |
* Knowledge and experience with IP routing, switching, wireless technologies, and VLANs
* Hands-on network engineering experience in deploying, and maintaining wired and wireless networks
* Experience in Cisco network management and monitoring solutions
* Understanding and experience with interconnection and troubleshooting techniques for
LAN hardware, including routers, wireless controllers, switches, access points, RF design, and protocol analysis.

CCNA and/or
CCNP certifications completed or renewed within the last 5 years
* Management of short to long term projects
* Team-oriented and skilled in working within a collaborative environment |
