What you'll do

The reliability team supports Viasat's products which keeps millions of people connected across the globe whether on land, air or sea. We assist in the design and development of RF hardware to support various programs. As a part of our team, you will learn to calculate the mean time between failures of products and integrate reliability into each step of a product lifecycle. You will gain experience operating a various equipment in the Reliability Lab.

With software being a critical component of Viasat equipment, software reliability is a field that is growing in importance. You will work with software engineers to develop software failure modes and effects analyses to identify and address potential reliability issues before they become problems.

Reliability is at the center of product improvement. Your work as a reliability intern will help drive business decisions, increase customer satisfaction, and increase product quality. Our impact covers the whole product lifecycle - from predicting potential problems in new products to understanding the field performance of equipment out in the field.


The day-to-day

  • Conduct physics-of-failure simulations and modeling in ANSYS Sherlock tool
  • Capture radiographs and CT images, check CAD design against real world samples
  • Collaborate with internal customers to develop software failure modes and effects analysis
  • Develop reliability predictions to help guide teams on design decisions
  • Support other reliability engineers on various projects and tasks

Internship Program Details:

  • You will work onsite at a Viasat office location for the duration of your 12-13 week internship. Viasat embraces a flexible work environment and onsite/hybrid work is determined by individual roles and teams

  • Housing and relocation assistance are available to interns pending eligibility

  • To ensure equity across our intern population, intern compensation is pre-determined based on a variety of factors including: role, location, and final graduation date. Intern compensation is non-negotiable


What you'll need

Education Requirements:

  • Currently pursuing Bachelor's degree or higher in Reliability Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or related field
  • To be eligible for this position your final graduation date must fall between December 2025 and June 2026

Additional Requirements:

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Office suite
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • A willingness to drive improvements and get to the root cause of a problem
  • Ability to work well with a wide variety of people and teams
  • US Citizenship is required for this position

Internship Dates:

  • You must be available for the full duration of the 12-13 week internship program. Note limited exceptions may be granted. Viasat offers two options based on semester and quarter academic calendars:

    • Cohort 1: May 20th, 2025 - August 15th, 2025

    • Cohort 2: June 17th, 2025 - September 12th, 2025

Salary range

$20.91 - $56.97 / hourly.
For specific work locations within San Jose, the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, the base pay range for this role is $25.96 - $67.07/ hourly
