Qualifications

POSITION SUMMARY

To provide clinical expertise in the areas of recreation and leisure in order to facilitate the development, maintenance and expression of appropriate leisure lifestyles for the patient population served according to the patient's ability and interest with purpose of helping the patient maintain an optimal level of physical and psychosocial functioning. Encourages patients to participate in social and recreational activities according to their abilities and interests.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Bachelor's or Master's Degree from an accredited college or university in Occupational, Art, Music, or Recreation Therapy, preferred.

Experience: Must be a qualified therapeutic recreation specialist or an activities professional who is licensed or registered, if applicable, by the state in which he or she practices and is eligible for certification as a therapeutic recreation specialist or as an activities professional by a recognized accrediting body on or after October 1, 1990; OR has two years of experience in a social or recreational program within the last five years, one year of which was full-time in a patient activities program in a health care setting; OR has completed training in order to be considered a qualified recreation staff member that can provide psychosocial and leisure activities.

Licensure: For a CTRS, must have a current certification as a Certified Therapeutic Recreational Specialist (CTRS), as determined by standards of the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRS). Completion of CTRS may be completed through any of the paths delineated by the NCTRC.

OR

For a Board Certified Art Therapist (ATR-BC), must have a current certification as Board Certified Art Therapist as determined by standards of the American Art Therapy Association; Currently registered as an Art Therapist (ATR) with the Art Therapy Credentials Board (ATCB), requires the completion of qualifying master's level education (including art therapy core curriculum, supervised practicum and internship experiences) and post-education supervised clinical experience.

OR

For an Activity Professional-Board Certified (AP-BC), must have a current certification as an Activity Professional-Board Certified as determined by standards of the National Association of Activity Professionals Credentialing Center (NAAPCC). Completion of AP-BC may be completed through any of the paths delineated by the NAAPCC.

OR

For a Music Therapist Board Certified (MT-BC), must have a current certification as a Board Certified Music Therapist as determined by standards of the Certification Board for Music Therapists.

Additional Requirements: Handle with Care training must be completed within 90 days of employment and prior to assisting in any restraining procedures. Competencies will be administered within 90 days of hire and annually via test taking, return demonstration, or the use of simulation. Required to work flexible hours, overtime for hourly staff, some holidays, and weekends. TB Test and CPR certification must be completed prior to working with patients. Must have knowledge of CMS, TJC, TAC, OSHA, state and federal regulatory requirements, and hospital policies.
