Purpose

As a Wastewater Collections Operator I, you will be responsible for the inspection, operation, and maintenance of wastewater collection systems. In this entry-level role, you will be involved in the daily operations of the collection system, ensuring safe, efficient, and compliant management of wastewater flows.

Accountabilities
  • Operate, inspect, and maintain wastewater collection systems
  • Perform routine cleaning and maintenance of sewer lines
  • Respond to and resolve sewer blockages, overflows, and other emergencies in a timely and efficient manner
  • Assist in the repair, replacement, and rehabilitation of wastewater collection infrastructure
  • Follow safety procedures and guidelines
  • Accurately record and document work activities, including inspections, maintenance, and repairs
  • Assist in maintaining accurate maps and records of the collection system
  • Participate in on-call rotations to respond to after-hours emergencies
  • Maintain and clean vehicles, tools, and equipment
  • Collaborate with other team members and departments to ensure effective operation of the wastewater system
  • Adhere to all federal, state, and local regulations and guidelines regarding wastewater operations
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to support other teams as needed
  • Perform other responsibilities as requested by leadership
Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Hold, or ability to obtain within six (6) months, a Grade I Wastewater Collections Operator Certification issued by the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ)
  • Valid driver's license with a good driving record
  • Ability to operate and maintain wastewater collection equipment
  • Basic knowledge of wastewater collection system operations and maintenance procedures
  • Ability to perform physical labor, including lifting heavy objects, working in confined spaces, and standing for extended periods
  • Willingness to work in all weather conditions, including extreme Arizona heat
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work as part of a team
  • Willingness to participate in ongoing training and professional development
