Position Summary:

The phlebotomist will work in one of our in-office locations in Southern Illinois. This position is multi -location, which will support VAC,SIC,FMLA leaves etc. For our accounts in Southern Illinois. Central Counties- Springfield, Central Counties- Taylorville, Jacksonville Correctional, Logan Correctional, Lincoln Correctional and Decatur Correctional. In addition to Murray Center for Developmental health in Centralia, Illinois.

Screen patients who present themselves for phlebotomy services to determine the need for any special instructions. Via computer, verify billing information availability, enter patient demographic data and test requests. Assess work flow and maintain adequate staffing to perform the necessary phlebotomies as needed. Perform phlebotomy on patients of all ages.

Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Make decisions to the completeness of specimens/specimens request
  • Perform manual computer procedures for test requesting, cancelling or crediting tests ordered and verifying billing information
  • Prioritize and organize work
  • Perform phlebotomy on patients of all ages
  • Greet patients
  • Screen preparedness for tests requested i.e. fasting, special diet.
  • If patient is adequately prepared, instruct patient to wait to be called. If patient is not prepared give appropriate instructions and make return appointment.
  • Answer phones for inquiries of results.
  • Recall data via LIS and report by phone.
  • Trace results not yet posted. Refer problems to Supervisor
  • Process patient specimens for delivery to the laboratory
  • Assess work flow and arrange with other supervisors temporary assistance in phlebotomy, as needed
  • Assist other staff in monitoring expandable supplies.
  • Stock drawing areas and order supplies in supervisors absence, as needed
  • Occasionally transport patients to clinic areas
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications Required:

  1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. One (1) year (12 months) of work experience as a phlebotomist within the last five years.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Have technician level knowledge of all areas of the laboratory (such as a certification eligible graduate from an approved technician school) would possess.
  • Possess an adequate set of skills related to computer functions including computer language and typing.
  • Knowledge of special handling of specimens required for most tests performed by the laboratory.
  • Know basic chemical symbols.
  • Able to identify appropriate laboratory areas, e.g., Chemistry, Toxicology, Microbiology, etc.
  • Able to learn over 200 laboratory codes and 50 patient locations.
  • Understand laboratory work flow so pending specimens can be quickly located.
  • Know aseptic technique as applied to the techniques of phlebotomy.
  • Know correct procedure for using standard phlebotomy equipment.
  • Know or be able to learn age-specific psycho-social needs of patients of all ages as it relates to phlebotomy.
  • Able to assess parent cooperation when drawing a child or assess need for special kindness when drawing a compromised adult.
  • Know or be able to learn non-verbal cues in communicating/interacting with patients of all ages.
  • Know or be able to learn basic first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
  • Know correct procedures for handling potentially infectious specimens so as not to contaminate self, co-workers or the work area.
  • Able to maintain an adequate inventory of expendable supplies notifying the supervisor and/or ordering replacements before stored supplies run out.
  • Exhibit a kindness and caring attitude when working with patients of all ages. Must be able to respond to patient fears with reassurance.
  • Exhibit a professional attitude when working with the public as well as medical personnel at all levels.
  • Able to converse in Spanish is highly desirable to facilitate communication with Hispanic patients served by the hospital and clinics.
