Responsibilities
- Process high volume weekly and off-cycle payrolls for multiple unions timely and accurately in accordance with company policy, union agreements and federal and state regulations.
- Perform payroll duties requiring knowledge of standard practices used in the preparation, distribution, and maintenance of payroll and payroll records.
- Manage workflow to ensure all payroll transactions are processed timely.
- Prepare special payments, complex pay and payroll deduction calculations ensuring compliance with company policies, union contracts and federal and state regulations.
- Identify, research, and assist in the resolution of payroll related discrepancies.
- Reconcile payroll and validate confirmed reports prior to submitting payroll for closing and dispersing.
- Understand proper taxation of all employee payments including employer paid benefits.
- Stay current on regulatory, legal and other payroll developments to foresee and/or address payroll initiatives and issues.
- Research and effectively communicate, both verbally and in writing, with employees and departments.
- Perform each assigned task, exercising routine methods and mechanics of the job and requesting assistance when unusual circumstances arise.
- Ensure records are maintained according to record retention requirements.
Qualifications
- Fundamental Payroll Certification (FPC) or Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) preferred.
- High school diploma or GED required,
- Basic accounting knowledge preferred.
- Three to five years multi-state payroll processing experience.
- Data entry experience.
- Solid understanding and working knowledge of payroll processes and systems, particularly in a union environment.
- Strong knowledge of state and federal payroll regulations with an emphasis on multi-state and local taxation.
- MS Office and computer skills.
- Excellent organizational, reading, and interpretation skills.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills and ability to maintain confidential information.
- High degree of professionalism and solid ability in delivering high quality customer service and establishing/maintaining effective and collaborative working relationships.
- Excellent judgment, analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and as a team player.
- Ownership of work.
