Job Summary

The Orientation and Family Program department is currently seeking Student Orientation Leaders (OL) to join their team of professionals. This is a non-customer facing position. Duties to include:

The following is a summary of the expectations of Orientation Leaders. As role models and leaders at FIU, OLs will:

  1. Assist New Students and Families
    1. Welcome new students and their families to FIU and assist them with check-in
    2. Develop a rapport with new students and their families, especially with those in your small groups
    3. Help new students assimilate, feel welcome, and get involved in the FIU community
    4. Be available and willing to answer questions of students and families throughout each program
    5. Prepare and conduct well-organized and thorough small group meetings and/or campus tours for new students and families
    6. Serve as an academic and social role model at all times
    7. Maintain contact with incoming students after orientation and provide support throughout their transition processes.
    8. Living in residence hall but not performing the work of Housing Residential Experience (HRE).
  2. Educational Duties
    1. Communicate information to students about academic resources and student activities/services available at FIU
    2. Educate students about their responsibilities at FIU by explaining university policies and procedures
    3. Share the privileges and responsibilities that come with being part of the FIU community and the role each of our new students plays in contributing to a safe and inclusive university environment
    4. Share relevant information and deadlines in order to ease students transitions into FIU
  3. Administrative Responsibilities
    1. Attend and be punctual to all training meetings and Orientation events
    2. Fully participate with a positive attitude in all assigned duties of orientation and take initiative with unanticipated tasks or problems
    3. Complete all tasks as requested by the office staff to ensure the program proceeds smoothly
    4. Set up all orientation materials prior to the start of each program
    5. Maintain regular communication with supervisors and discuss with them situations that warrant their attention or action
    6. Assist all presenters at scheduled programs, meetings, and sessions throughout Orientation
    7. Be supportive and inclusive of all staff members in the Orientation and Family Programs office
    8. Respond appropriately to feedback and evaluations
    9. Remain flexible at all times to help calmly manage unexpected changes
Minimum Qualifications

  • Be currently enrolled as a degree-seeking student at FIU
  • Maintain half-time status by taking at least 6 credit hours in both Spring 2023 and Fall 2023 semesters
  • Possess and maintain minimum FIU cumulative and semester GPA of 2.5
  • Be in good conduct standing or restricted good conduct standing with the University under Regulations FIU-2501 and FIU-105 at the time of application
  • Satisfy requirements of a Level 2 Background Check (includes fingerprinting and criminal background)
  • Meet all other eligibility requirements for employment, as stipulated by FIU, including having a government-issued ID and a Social Security Number/Card in hand or the ability to secure one (international students should confirm with International Student and Scholar Services their ability to work before applying)
  • Reliability and your commitment during scheduled orientation dates
  • Prior completion of FIU Service Excellence training or completion within first 30 days
  • Basic levels of Microsoft Office and Microsoft Excel
  • Customer Service Knowledge
  • Ability to work in a team setting
  • Ability to take direction and work independently as needed

  • Applicants must be currently enrolled as a student at FIU with a minimum of six (6) credits as an Undergraduate student or three (3) credits as a Graduate student during the Fall and Spring semesters.
  • During the Summer semesters, Students need only remain enrolled and are not required to take credit hours, but cannot have graduated.
  • Upon graduating, student employment must end.
Work Schedule

  • Orientation dates: April 22, 2025 - December 19, 2025
  • Select training/event dates: March 14, 2025 - August 29, 2025
