Job Summary

Under general supervision of the Manager of Access Services, the Access Services Assistant provides core services to support the teaching, research, and clinical activities of UCSF faculty, students, and staff. Within the Access Services unit, this position performs functional circulation and reserves services, stack maintenance, interlibrary loan, and information desk staffing across Parnassus Heights, Mission Bay, Benioff Oakland, and the Zuckerberg San Francisco General (ZSFG) Library locations. Collaborating with peers and colleagues within the unit and the Library, the Access Services Assistant stays abreast of library policies, services, events, and special projects to effectively communicate with patrons on a daily basis. This position also has additional duties which may include preparing and shipping out materials, contributing to service data collection through pre-established reporting mechanisms, reporting emergencies or library security problems to appropriate leadership and campus units and assisting with opening and closing of the unit and the library.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $26.98 - $35.06 (Hourly Rate).

The Access Services unit is the face of the libraries, primarily providing services from physical desks located within main library locations at Parnassus Heights, Mission Bay, and ZSFG hospital. The mission of Access Services is to connect patrons with services, resources, and spaces. Working with all units across the library, Access Services empowers the delivery of a high-quality, welcoming, inclusive, and user-centered experience across all services and virtual and physical spaces.

Required Qualifications


  • Demonstrated working knowledge of basic business technologies (e.g. Microsoft Office 365 products, Box, etc.)
  • Strong communication skills: ability to provide information clearly, tactfully, and effectively with a variety of library users in person, on the phone, or via email. Ability to display calm, helpful, positive, friendly and professional behavior.
  • Proven ability to maintain regular attendance and punctuality and maintain flexibility in schedule and work location.
  • Ability to follow and give instructions both in writing and verbally.
  • With minimal supervison, ability to independently perform detailed, repetitive work according to unit policies and procedures.
  • Ability to organize work, set priorities, and meet deadlines - often with frequent interuptions.
  • Excellent accuracy and attention to detail when carrying out processing functions.
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of individuals in a team based environment.

Preferred Qualifications


  • 2+ years experience working in an academic and/or health sciences library
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of library technologies (e.g. integrated library systems, support ticketing systems, etc.)
  • Strong familiarity with library terminology and operations with working knowledge of both the Library of Congress and National Library of Medicine's classification system sufficient to perform all circulation and information related tasks.
  • Ability to follow policies, processes, and protocol when handling emergency siutations and to appropriately refer or report problem patrons to appropriate leadership or department (e.g. conflicts between patrons, and patrons who violate library policies and procedures.)
