Compensation Grade: P22Compensation Details: Minimum: $78,554.00 - Maximum: $78,554.00 AnnuallyDepartment (OPH) WADS - Wadsworth CenterJob Description: Responsibilities Health Research, Inc. is seeking a Research Scientist II to work within the Wadsworth Center. As a member of the largest state public health Virology laboratory team in the US, the successful applicant for this position will participate in the characterization of circulating and emerging human viral pathogens of major public health interest, including influenza and other non-influenza respiratory viruses. State-of-the-art methods employed in this work include numerous molecular detection and sequencing techniques. The incumbent will assist with the characterization of viruses detected in specimens, the development of future analysis methods and pipelines, and aid in critical response efforts to disease threats. This position will be part of a dynamic team serving the Wadsworth Center's mission in the New York State Department of Health's efforts to protect and promote the health of New York's citizens. Come be a part of Science in the Pursuit of Health Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree in a related field and three years of research experience; or a Master's degree in a related field and two years of research experience; or a Doctorate in a related field. Preferred Qualifications At least one year of experience in bioinformatics data analysis and use of scientific software to analyze next generation sequence data for the detection and/or characterization of viral pathogens. Familiarity with managing and processing sequence data from multiple sequencing platforms. Experience working in cloud environments, preferably Google Cloud Platform. Experience in programming (Python, Java, C/C++, Perl or other programming/scripting languages). Experience in collaborative coding environments (GitHub). Ability to interface sequence reports and results to laboratory information management (LIMS) systems. Conditions of Employment Grant funded position. Compliance with funding requirements such as time and effort reporting, grant deliverables, and contract deliverables, is required. This position requires that the incumbent will report to the official work location and live within commuting distance to the official work location. Telecommuting may be available on a very limited basis. Travel, up to 10% of the time, will be required. Exposure to potentially hazardous substances may be involved with this position. Therefore, the incumbent in this position may be required to wear personal protective clothing and equipment including but not limited to a laboratory coat, gloves and eye protection, as applicable.
